Malfurion Stormrage is no longer the first druid

If what we were told in the new cinematic is actually true and not a fever dream cause by one too many mushrooms, then it means that the Haranir knew some form of druidism/shapeshifting long before the night elves and even trolls existed.

Oh shoot you’re right. More reason to assume it’s all BS and the haranir are just dumb inbreds I guess.

The Haranir being some form of proto druid, doesn’t mean Malfurion is no longer the first mortal to be taught druidism by Cenarius

Why people still try so hard to abolish this statement? I keep hearing constantly—“Well, actually…:index_pointing_up: :nerd_face:Trolls/Tauren/Haranir, were the real first druids.”

Like… I get it. Each of them started drawing power from nature before Kaldorei. However, they only grasped the chapter on nature magic, not the whole book. This really annoys me, especially regarding the Haranir: they can use astral magic, yet 99% of them have never seen the sun or the moon. If you think about it, Haranir Balance druids make about as much sense as Tauren Rogues.

Cenarius is literal the Lord of the Forest, one of the most powerful beings in the Emerald Dream. His father is one of the top ten most powerful Wild Gods, his mother is a Life deity on a power level comparable to the Titans, and his adoptive mother (who was also Malfurion’s teacher) is one of the two dragons who keep life on Azeroth in balance. I would rather trust his world than any other sources. Even Blizzard itself stated—and never retconned (I probably don’t need to say how important this is) —that Malfurion is the first druid.

Yes however,

I dont think this has to delete Malfurion, but Blizzard really needs to be careful with the wording here.

The Haranir having ancient nature magic, root magic or shapeshifting is fine. They can have their own older tradition. But “older shapeshifters” should not suddenly mean “the real first druids” and make Malfurion’s place in the Cenarion druid tradition smaller.

Druidism should be more than just turning into an animal. Shamans can turn into wolves too and nobody calls them druids because of that alone.

My issue is not the Haranir having lore. My issue is when modern Blizzard introduces a new race and then makes them secretly older, more important and connected to everything. New lore should expand the world, not step on older lore just to make the newest thing look special

The thing is, the Haranir are not more important or more connected. They are failures. Think about it, they left the surface looking for their goddess (Azeroth). The found the where she used to be and just gave up. ‘Welp, she is not here. Oh well, we live here now.’ They then concocted a story about themselves and their importance. But they just aren’t that connected to much of anything. Their stories they tell of themselves say they are super important. But the story the game is telling doesn’t really show them as that important. Heck, we go save them. Most of them were so full of themselves they would not have reached out and would have gotten wiped out by the lightbloom.

In short, they think they are important. But the story mostly makes them impotent.

Trolls were druids before Malfurion so not sure it will change something now.

Malfurion is the first officially recognized mortal druid according to the lore and nothing up to this point has contradicted or retconned that.

Gond with the Raptari:

  • Gonk is a loa
  • The Raptari are a Zandalari order that serves Gonk. They consist mainly of druids and warriors.
  • The Raptari exists since Dazar was alive, if not before
  • Dazar founded Zuldazar
  • Dazar and Zuldazar are older than Night Elves and Malfurion (several thousands of years)
  • Raptari were a thing before the Night Elves and Malfurion and they are druids and warriors serving Gonk

Still doesn’t change the fact that Malfurion is the FIRST MORTAL druid. That’s the official and unchanged lore

Raptari are druids and they are a thing before Malfurion was born. It’s in the game and it’s official, I don’t see the problem here. I thought Night Elves were the first druids too before we show me this.

Malfurion is the first mortal druid. The raptari being first is irrelevant to the factual lore of the game.

Going to keep telling you this until you understand that current lore trumps everything

This come from TWW (2025)

This come from Chronicles (2016)

Raptari are druids and they are a thing before Malfurion was born. It’s the factual lore of the game. Raptari, troll druids, were a thing before Night Elf exist. It’s literally in the game, we can’t make more accurate in the canon and in the lore.

Except if Blizz says something to clarify this. Raptari were a thing before Night Elf exist.

Nothing has claimed that Malfurion isn’t the first mortal druid.

He still is. And nothing contradicts or has retconned that up to this point.

I put here what is the “problem”:

Feel free to interpret it as you want.

There’s nothing to interpret. We KNOW, FACTUALLY, that Malfurion is the first mortal druid. A handful of warriors and a few troll druids serving a loa doesn’t contradict the lore that malfurion was the first mortal to be taught druidism by Cenarius

We know it from old lore and we have new elements with new lore about this now. And I’m not speaking about the new lore we got today.

And what I’m saying is that old lore about Malfurion has not been retconned. At all. It’s stiill stands. A handful of warriors and a few trolls who have what mimics druidism doesn’t change that Malfurion was the first to be taught druidism as we know it in the lore

Hasn’t the whole “malfurion being the proto-druid” not really come up since like? Cataclysm or something. I mean in the sense of it being an actual plot device, now its mostly about his power/connection to the dream rather than him being the first to plug in.

I don’t think malfurion or cenarius doubt that he was the first, or at the time of the lore substantiating he as being the first that they believed that. But it also speaks nothing on their understanding/knowledge of the zandalari knowing of druidism / connecting to the loa/dream.

Things can happen ingame without all the lore characters getting a text message informing them of the fact. So when one of the characters continues to believe “they are the first” when we the player know they are not… we don’t need to wait until that character gets that text message.
