That would take so much work though is the issue, with how many people play the game you would have to have an entire dedicated team to this. Which blizzard would not be willing to find similar to how they don’t have a team dedicated to name creation which would filter out the bulk of bad actors doing what their doing currently.
You make a good point, although I admit to being optimistic with this. Maybe I’m wrong but I see it working.
This is basically how Monster Hunter titles work.
You have like 3-4 slots and you choose random words to make your own title, that’s displayed above your name.
Some of the words you can use are actual character or monster names.
Fugen, the hunt chieftain, for example.
Folks were using “Fugen your lady” as a title, it was great.
My title was “Slow-Roast your Butt/Rear” or something along those lines, lol.
Charge $10/title and then have one person do the moderation with an “it takes as long as it takes” queue. Add an exponential cooldown on title creation when failing the moderation - first time 1 day, second time 3 days, etc. – so that bad faith actors can’t bog it down.
That could work, but again I doubt blizzard would be willing to do that given they would have done so already with name creation given the bulk of the racist or vulgar names I see are created using the special characters. Along with doesn’t exclude when they reorder the letters in some cases to again circumvent the system which it won’t be able to detect easily without reordering the letters yo see if they can spell an offensive word or name.
Yea that’s the part I don’t get. I’m a software developer. Doing some ASCII conversion is, like… trivially simple. I don’t know why they wouldn’t have done that already.
EDIT: The reordering one is a bit trickier… you’d have to start recognizing patterns instead of doing simple conversions. But, conceivable, especially with lower cost machine learning available – if that much would even be necessary.
If it bothers u so much then hide player names.
Players can already make vulgar names, just report and move on…
I pretty much ignore character frames now, along with the bulk of the groups I play with are civilized and act mature over the teenage or adult edge lords that think it’s funny to be as destructive as they possibly can. Heck I even have trade and boost chat filtered out in separate windows, primarily to reduce the spam levels.
Yet my stance is whey even allow it in the first place, why even allow people to behave in the manner they are when their targeting specific groups in their names and phrases their using.
They’re not allowed…
That’s why there’s rules and a reporting system.
Do what you can, which seems like you are.
Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t allow last names for those who wouldn’t abuse it.
I at first thought you would be talking about making the current in game character naming less silly. Surnames, apostrophes, dashes and spaces all would be neat to make more lore friendly and more creative names.
…But ALSO yes lift gendered restrictions on titles. All variants should be gender agnostic.
To add, funny/goofy/silly names are just fine. The goal of all my silly-named characters is to [hopefully] give someone out there a good chuckle when they see it. Makes the world [of Warcraft] a happier place, even if it doesn’t make much sense lore-wise. I’ve seen tense, drama-laden raids being brought down a notch by bringing in a random player with a stupid name. One time we brought in a gnome mage named “Littlespanky” to replace a dc’d DPS and a shouting match between the tanks turned into outrageous laughter and a mutual apology for the drama.
…Then again, we have Gnomes and Vulpera as playable races. Dwarves look funny when they run, and there are transmog options to have Tauren in chef hats and wield ladles and mugs. So, take that as you will about canon humor.
“Boredumb the Bored”
Make all titles available regardless of body type, imo. There are female Lords. And there’s no reason to limit what people want to use.
Also, naming policy should be the following:
- 20 characters long
- 1 choice of hyphen, apostrophe or space
I would love the ability to go by “Grandmaster (name), Legend of Pandaria”, “Veilstrider (name), Guardian of the Pattern”, and the like.
This is long overdue. I would also settle for us just being able to have apostrophes in our names, considering there are a lot of troll characters who do.
Sadly, I completely agree with your assessment here. It’s not worth Blizzard’s time to try to police another user-input system. They’re kind of stuck with letting people use names because it’s so basic a feature of creating a character, but it would be a headache for them to add more.
I would love to see titles that give a buff when you put on the title. AION did exactly that. One of the best known examples being the “Postal” title which gave a speed buff as long as the title was on your character.
