Maiev is more resilient than the Lich King

I feel like Fantasy fits better (obviously pre-End Times). But it might just because I think her Illidan equivalent should be a vampire.

Though, it makes me wonder if someone can embrace Chaos powers in 40k full on to the degree of being a daemon and still be capable of fighting against them. I feel like probably not, but not sure.

Aesthetically, Fantasy def fits better. But while reading the Illidan book I couldn’t shake the feeling that Illidan was a Chaos sorcerer of Tzeentch and Maiev the Inquisitor in charge of catching him.

Probably because King typically, from my understanding, writes Warhammer novels. But I got the feeling before I knew that as well. The way the Legion is presented is heavily reminiscent of the impression I got from Chaos. Especially the sequence where he travels the countless ruined planets.

There’s certainly enough semi-fantasy aesthetic with prevalence of melee weapons and how the warp works to make it fine. I guess they could technically be Eldar as well.

Edit: We decided this was worth its own thread topic. Avatars of Smoldering Vengeance theory - #2 by Cantaloupe-wyrmrest-accord

So real quick before I go to the company Christmas party, I wanted to share a theory my friend Yana had on Maiev’s Avatars of Smoldering Vengeance (I don’t know if Yana posts on here).

Anyway, his idea was that Avatars of Vengeance, and thus Avatars of Smoldering Vengeance, aren’t actually spirits on their own (with AoV I think that’s actually canon). Sure, AoV can raise Spirits of Vengeance in WC3, but the Avatars themselves come from the Warden. They are manifestations of that Warden’s hatred and vengeance-lust, and thus take that Warden’s form. Carry this concept through to 8.1, and it would mean that the Avatars Maiev summons aren’t actually the spirits of dead civilians. Rather Maiev, now feeling vengeance on their behalf, is manifesting Avatars in their image. It’s a neat concept that could speak to Maiev’s emotional development beyond what she was.

Now carry this idea through even further with Sira’s Avatars of Suffering. Her Avatars are manifestations of the suffering she personally feels. That is why they take her image, because she is the subject of that emotion.

This opens up a new range of possibilities for different Avatars in the future. If we look at the WC3 Reforged Maiev concept art, we see an Avatar that burns white instead of the usual AoV black. It makes me wonder if this is another kind of Avatar we will see in WC3 with the revisions they’re doing.

Anyway, to wrap it all up I’m completely ok with either theory (the AoSV being actual ghosts or manifestations), but I thought Yana’s idea was interesting enough to share here and get opinions on. Good idea or bad idea?

As I have said before, Maiev is way cooler than Tyrande.

Maiev is the stabby goddess, and Sam is her high priestess.

She sat outside of a jailcell for ten thousand years.

She and the other Watchers/Wardens regularly went on missions across the whole of Azeroth. The Barrow Deeps held other prisoners besides Illidan, as did the Vault. By Illidan’s own account, he rarely saw his own captors. They only came to check up on him every once in awhile, Maiev most frequently of them. He would sometimes go centuries without seeing a single face.

So yes, she’s spent 10,000 years hunting and killing Azeroth’s most dangerous creatures.

Although she deeply respected Malfurion, his merciful decision hardly satisfied Maiev. She offered to watch over Illidan, whose attack on his fellow night elves had been the last straw. Most night elves now recognized him as both reckless and powerful. They had not forgotten that he had chosen to serve [Sargeras], and they did not believe him when he swore he had done so only to gain sufficient power to defeat the Legion. Malfurion agreed that the night elves dared not leave Illidan unguarded in the long term, and so he asked Maiev to gather additional volunteers from the Sisterhood of Elune. Together, Maiev and the other priestesses would guard Illidan and prevent him from escape. Maiev obeyed and established a new organization that became known as the [Watchers](https://wow.gamepedia.com/Watchers).[10]

Speak of the devil and he doth appear.

I don’t like Arthas tho

There was a gif that I saw on the SF discord of Maiev blinking out of the blight, but her just resisting it? I have an issue with that.

The GIF in questions showed her being surrounded by undead blight throwers and then blinking out of the trap they’d set in order to attack them from behind. It showed that the character couldn’t just withstand blight, but that she was calm and strategic enough to deal with it. That in my mind shows her as being competent and capable.

Just being able to stand in it? It saps a lot of that away. A heroic character that just can’t be demolished because they can withstand attacks naturally is not interesting to me.

The Watchers were created specifically and exclusively to be Illidan’s jailors, but as further threats came up, Tyrande broadened the Watchers’ role to include guarding other prisoners. Maiev took grim pleasure in these added responsibilities. Watchers became jailors and marshals: they policed the barrow prisons and hunted down dangerous criminals.

Since Illidan’s incarceration, the Watchers’ primary mission remained their vigil over him. However, the Watchers’ duties widened somewhat over time and began to include the capture, imprisonment, and–where necessary–the recapture of all dangerous criminals. These new tasks occasionally took a Watcher far abroad, where she would remain until she tracked down and captured the criminal.

Shortly before the Third War broke out, Maiev departed the barrow prisons in order to accomplish one such mission.

Telarius Voidstrider is a night elf demon hunter located underground in the [Bashal’Aran Collapse]. Although he is not marked as an undead, he is in fact a ghost, having been slain during a confrontation with the warden Maiev Shadowsong many years before the Shattering.
