Mage tower opinions

It is weird because many of attempts were in the final phase, there’s just a lot going on and boomy has to soak runes compared to the other classes which complicate things. MM was fun, didn’t even have to interrupt the hands with how much dps I was putting out. Prot Warrior took you 150? wtf…that took me like 6 pulls lol I found tanking a breeze and a joy. Especially P2 , the only thing that sucks is when you get too many infernals or they hit you when you’re trying to save velen. Velen really is a garbage disposal in this challenge though.

My monk hasn’t been played since Legion so I didn’t have a lot of flexibility but my wipes were mostly due to Infernals but I was talking about difficulty if I had to pick among the tanks. Monk took me probably 8 pulls, none of my tanks took went over 10 attempts honestly for me except for Guardian pre-nerf day 1 for TW mage tower. I did it again a 2nd time and got it in 4 tries. I don’t know, I prefer the tank challenge honestly.

I am 3/7 all from the mage specs completed first week it was out. Frost was the toughest for me because it is the spec I haven’t played that much this expansion. I will try leveling alts for the next time the MT comes around for the four challenges I haven’t done.

You expected having to redo Guardian progression after having done it ?

4 tries is a lot for a Farm fight. Guardian was the hardest tank, maybe tied with Blood at best. The least amount of tools with the most mechanics (Horror casts).

Sub was the hardest one for me (on par with Guardian). Holy Paladin might’ve been my favorite since it felt like a cool solo campaign adventure with the various stages and “intermissions”.

2nd account, and nah , I found both of them really easy. I haven’t touched my blood dk also in like 4 years and done it in like 6 go. Honestly most of my attempts were in the healing challenge for my pursuit for the FoS because I haven’t play any other healer except disc since legion.

I don’t think I’d call bear easy but it’s really not as bad as people have been trying to make it sound. I’ll take it over Aff. Lock any day.

  1. Sigryn (ret paladin)
  2. Twins (frost mage)
  3. Agatha (unholy DK)
  4. Healer (holy pal)
  5. Kruul (guardian druid)
  6. Tugar (disc priest)
  7. Xylem (frost DK)

These are based on my 7/7 done. If we count other classes this would change where Agatha is easiest, followed by Sig or Totem, than probably Twins. I didn’t really find Kruul that tough (on guardian only, won’t do others because I don’t tank). P1 is a freebie, you have way to charge from knockbacks, and the kit is incredibly strong for P2. Xylem’s P1 is far longer with far deadlier mechanics. P2 is an even tighter dps check with more complex mechanics than Kruul.

I mostly tried the Unholy one, one can really notice the lack of care in the content - after all there are a few hundred devs on an on-going strike.

6 pulls?? Ack!

I had at least 30-40+ wipes just from the bugs on the fight. Had multiple pulls where no orbs spawned. I finally went to check one pull and found some… but they were invisible. The biggest bug though was the stack of aura of decay. I would charge Variss and instantly have 3 stacks sometimes. Once I got to 5-6 stacks, I’d run out and sometimes get another 3 stacks.

Ignoring that stuff though, the second phase is just a cluster. The strat that finally worked for me was just using all the orbs (3-4) and CC to stop the third annihilate. Every single time I tried to pool rage, I was almost always short for it or the forth one.

That’s what bothers me so much about that encounter. If you transition into phase 2 and all the infernals are dead, it’s a cake walk. If you transition and all of them are just respawning, make it way more difficult.

I’m wondering if the invisible orbs were some sort of graphics issue with your computer? I completed the tank challenge on all tank specs in Legion and on guardian this time around and never had this issue.

Edit for the op: The specs I completed them with (easiest to hardest imo): Demo, Disc, MM, Fire, Guardian, Rsham, Havoc

I just did the Havoc DH one.

After what I went through to complete it, I’m just not really interested in trying to complete the MT for other toons I have.

I saw another post with the same complaint. Could be isolated though for sure.

I’ve managed to complete 21/36 (although I only managed to play during the last 2 weeks the mage tower was up). Here’s my experience doing them without optimising gear / consumables.

So far, it feels like the healer ones are difficult, but you can learn to beat them (did paladin, druid, and shaman).

Agatha is very easy on the ones I did (feral, ele, dk, and fury). twins was also fairly easy on the ones i did (aff and balance).

feltotem i felt was easy for bm hunter but medium difficulty for destro lock (i didn’t have enough healing to survive the passive damage, but nobody seemed to have this problem when i watched guides? perhaps gearing issue).

god-queen was easy to medium on ret and enhancement, but difficult on demo lock for me - the difficulty for god-queen wasn’t mechanics but just rng. all it took was one bad overlap and that would be a wipe, which was more forgiving on paladin and shaman because you have movement speed abilities, but not so much on lock.

tank ones i felt was medium difficulty (completed on all tanks), and if anything the dps check in p2 was the limiting factor. i’d often get to ‘maximum’ annihilates (different tanks could go to different stacks) and not be able to kill kruul.

Xylem, though. eff. this. guy. did it on frost dk which was pretty hard. did it on fury warrior which was ok. then tried it on havoc… on which i’ve been hard stuck for 2 days. holy crap, the RNG involved with self healing in p1 is just ridiculous. i know people have completed this but all my runs seem to be totally dependent on getting some shards while the boss freecasts frostbolts (or even arcane sometimes) to my face. i even went and got a crusader enchant which makes a HUGE difference… and it’s still RNG. and the dps check in p2, i’m unable to meet. i’m saving both eye beam and glaives for the adds (so slight loss of dps on the boss where i would like to just use them on cd) and i can get to about 15% before running out of space. i’m not starting in the middle and i don’t have an optimised gear set, but i don’t think this should be necessary to complete it.

in any case, i’ve enjoyed the challenges, but i think some easier / harder than others. i feel it might have been a better experience if: 1) template gear / no consumables so that it’s a skill check, not optimising a timewalking set. 2) classes are made ‘whole’ (as some people have argued, not dependent on borrowed power). in fact, for point 2, this is a major gripe of mine regarding wow in general. i would like all the classes and specs to be re-designed to be stand-alone and competitive, but that’s a topic for a different post.

Starting in the middle is the play for havoc dh, went from similar 15% wipes to beating it using that strat. Also don’t run away as soon as he starts channeling the adds in p2 or you lose a lot of dps on boss. Wait like 3-4 seconds then run out.

I completed the following and ordered them in difficulty from easiest to hardest:

  • The God-Queen’s Fury - Arcane Mage
  • An Impossible Foe - Fury Warrior
  • Feltotem’s Fall - Beast Mastery Hunter
  • Thwarting the Twins - Shadow Priest

The God-Queen’s Fury challenge is not the same as it was in Legion. There is now an enrage-like mechanic where the NPCs will start casting their deadly abilities back to back if Jarl Velbrand is not downed fast enough. All of the NPCs seem to have more HP in comparison to character DPS output than they did in Legion (7.2 release). However, the change in HP did not seem too overtuned.

Agatha has a lot more HP in comparison to character DPS output than she did in Legion (7.2 release). This just turned the fight into a boring endurance challenge to see how long you could deal with deadly mechanics without slipping. The same can be said about the Feltotem’s Fall challenge.

The HP on Raest for shadow priest is outrageously overtuned. This led to people using a strategy of killing Karam, letting Raest enrage, and then moving in and out of his range to whittle him down. Blizzard decided to “fix” this strategy by having Raest move when you get out of range and softening his enrage by a small amount. Unfortunately it created new problems such as pet attacks causing Raest to reposition himself for no reason. If shadow priests had the passive CC and higher mobility like they did in Legion, the HP of Raest would be justifiable.

I think the HP on some of the NPCs in all of these challenged could be reduced. The challenges would still be quite difficult. Overall I did not find this iteration of the mage tower to be fun. It was just frustrating.

I did the mage tower on this guy at level 50 buy spending 30k gold on twink gear in the AH.

Arcane has the lowest health on them. 207k health to burn. Try Assassination : 370k health to burn.

That sucks. I was commenting specifically for arcane mage. The HP seemed higher, but fine.

I managed to kill Agatha with my fury warrior after many, many, many tries (200+ or so). Unsuccessful with the Healer challenge with my resto druid after the same amount of tries.

I know I’m not the most skilled player. I’m casual, I mostly play solo and I actually love Torghast. I never did MT in Legion so in a lot of ways, I went in cold. Eventually with Agatha, I started getting used to the mechanics, but it was still brutal for me and winning just made me feel relieved, not proud. I tried Xylem with my Arms warrior for a bit, and it actually seemed straightforward, so because I had limited amount of time, I thought I’d work on my healer first.

Healer mage tower simply feels unfair. I’m happy people have completed it, but after managing to get past a very brutal first phase, failing a 5 minute dps phase feels awful. Let me heal and get around mechanics, of course, but it’s a literal race to get everything
perfect and having all the stars align to break through.

Because of the holidays, I didn’t spend as much time as I wanted to, but I did spend all of last weekend on it. I wish I could say I enjoyed it, but I just didn’t. I’m not looking for freebies. I’m not even looking for a challenge I can finish in 100 tries, but I did want something that felt fair.

MT was a complete failure for 97% of the community.

Complete waste of time.
