Mage Tower Has No Skill Involved

Seriously. There’s no skill behind the current MT. It’s all about gear optimization, and consumables. Nothing to do with skill. Anyone can beat it if they have decked out old-TW sets. Doesn’t matter how skilled you are at the game, someone who has way better gear for it will succeed before you do.

I have a decked out timewalking set and it’s a similar level of difficulty to what I remember from Legion in Tomb of Sargeras LFR gear

Also a lot of people’s timewalking sets these days include azerite gear, and azerite powers are disabled in the Mage Tower

You’re kidding, right? Have you tried God-Queen’s Fury at all?

You pretty nuch have to unfortunately just to squeeze out that last 10%

No amount of gear will interrupt drain life, switch to eyes, pick up horrors and evade smashes while jumping over lines in the Tank mage tower.

The gear will simply help you push P1 before there are too many infernals and kill P2 before Annihilate overwhelms your defensives. The rest of the encounter will require focus, reflexes and spacial awareness.

wait, so… anyone can put on a time walk set and roll their face across the keyboard to win?

I’m still struggling with P1 :frowning:

More and more progress… but when I got circles, the charge and the dude getting the melee buffs hurt.

Yes and no. I think the real “skill” part comes from understanding every single mechanic and executing them properly. Everything beyond that is questionable design when comes to a solo challenge like this.

A challenge like this is GREAT but it has to be done properly. There should be no gear, consumables and the character in play should be a pre generated one. That’s when pure skill start to really shine and there is no question about anything(except garbage designs of the various encounters they throw together).

I can only speak to the Ret challenge (god Queens Fury), but it’s 100% a gear check. If you don’t have the gear then you don’t have the dps and they “enrage” and you lose.

I tried many times believing gear didn’t matter and failed. Then I switched out all of my PvP gear for haste gear, bought the correct consumables, got 2 old PvE trinkets and artifact/legendary gear out of the bank, and finally succeeded.

I had the mechanics down from early on and would repeatedly hit the soft enrage timer despite maximizing cleave/cooldowns. That’s not a “skill” issue it’s a gear/consumables one. These fights should be 100% templated to provide an even challenge across the board for all players and truly test skill as opposed who has the best exploit(double crusader enchants lawl)/gear/etc.

this is the entire game isn’t it, in terms of ‘challenging’ content. It has always been more about understanding how things work than actual ‘skill’.

No skill? I’m not going to lie that gear matters more than it should, but no skill involved? 0?
It’d put it at 5% trinkets, 2% gear, and rest skill.
Also the best reason to farm up old gear is to not suffer the gold repairs.

The mechanics are easy enough to understand. Aside from proper summoning circle RNG for shadow priest (example), it’s the gear that makes the encounter at least 50% easier because of the increased damage, healing, and utility provided. For example, you can soak a Hand from Beyond cast IF you can crit a Power Word:Shield that allows you to survive with 2% hp left. If you don’t get the critical off on Power Word:Shield, you die. The gear makes it so you can basically skip that mechanic, so the skill involved to deal with it does not matter as much. Also, the increased damage will allow you to push phases faster, and because you are pushing phases faster, you have less mechanics to deal with. If you can kill Karam fast enough on his second awakening, you only have to deal with one Hand of Beyond (that you can ignore if you have the gear that allows you to cast a Power Word:Shield that gives you enough absorption to soak the cast), whilst with the standard TW scaling you’ll have to deal with at least 2, and sometimes 3 if you choose not to use PI during that phase.

Also, the gear will allow you to clear the adds on P2 before Karam even awakens, that you cannot do because you miss the damage check with standard scaling.

In conclusion, gear that is better optimized for TW :

  1. Trivializes some mechanics (Hand from Beyond)
  2. Pushes phases more comfortably (clearing packs before Karam awakens)
  3. Pushes phases faster in general.

hence, has nothing to do with skill, but instead having good enough gear.

I wish I could be like you and play perfectly all the time and have no room for improvement.

I have done the Shadow Priest encounter for 8 hours. I understand every mechanic, perfected my positioning, and cycling cooldowns to maximize throughput.

It always came down to the very last phase, where I would lose purely because summoning circles were either spawning on packs that I could not kill in time. Sometimes I could use my psychic scream to deal with it so I could soak it, but by the next poor RNG of summoning circles, I wouldn’t have Psychic Scream or the damage required to clear the pack before they got to me. It got to the point where, I either soak the circle and die to the packs that I cannot deal with, or don’t soak the circle, and die from the NPC that spawns from it.

Which ultimately made me conclude that the encounter came down to either RNG, or having gear/consumables that makes the encounter almost trivial.

Which by the way, has always been the nature of the game. If there’s an encounter that you could not deal with purely because of numbers, then you could simply outgear it and not have to worry about it. The Mage Tower is no exception to this.

so go get the gear that will make it trivial?

I don’t have millions of gold to spend on optimizing for old content that’s only around for two weeks.

its like maybe 80k but whatever excuse you wanna make that seems to be working for you
