Mac Studio M4 Max

I use an LG UltraGear at 144HZ and have been very pleased with it.
I also connect via thunderbolt to DP 2.1 cable, not HDMI.

Are you able to get 144 frames with WoW on your mac?

I’m running Wow Retail on a M3 Ultra 28-core CPU 60-core GPU 96GB RAM at full 4k 144fps with all settings on high if anyone was wondering how that machine runs it. I have a triple monitor setup with two 4k 60hz displays. In raids it drops down to maybe 80fps, but I don’t even notice it. I can’t hear the fans.

Damn this makes me want the M3 Ultra so bad.

There is no comparable 5120x2880 220ppi monitor on the market nor is there a panel which would allow making a “better” Studio Display without sacrificing something else. LG have announced intentions to make a 5120x2880 Mini-LED without even committing to a date and there’s a QD-OLED on their roadmap which could arrive sometime before 2030.

Agree to disagree on this however if one wants what the Studio Display provides, there is no alternative. A plastic-fantastic 144hz 2160p monitor is not superior. macOS does fractional scaling better than any other OS but it’s still fractional scaling.

If you have the disposable income to pay the Apple tax you should.

I do most of the time. I have resolution set 2560 x 1440.

Hello, fellow Apple fans — happy to be here with you :apple:
This is such a great topic to discuss, especially because there are still silly stereotypes that Macs aren’t good for gaming.
I actually switched from Windows, and honestly, I have zero desire to go back. Constantly reinstalling Windows, updating drivers and BIOS, replacing thermal paste… plus my old PC with an RTX 3080 ran so hot and loud, it felt like a real furnace. It was awful.

Right now I’m using a Mac Studio with an M2 Max chip.
In WoW (outside of raids and epic battlegrounds), I’m getting a steady 120 FPS.

Someone also asked about monitors — I can highly recommend the LG OLED 42’’. Technically, it’s a TV, but it works beautifully as a monitor. The picture is so bright and stunning. After switching to OLED, I never want to go back to IPS. No blurring, no visible pixels — just crystal clear visuals.

I’m also planning to upgrade soon to the M4 Max.

By the way, I created a thread in the general discussion section showing off my gaming setup — here’s the link if you’d like to check it out

That’s an incredible setup. What settings do you run to get that performance?

Hello, thank you, here is a screenshot with my settings, but I’m a Russian girl, I don’t have English in the game client. I hope you can figure out the settings

50% render scale and FXAA, that would look super blurry. with that hardware spec i can bet you’d get a much better image with 75% render scale and CMAA 2 instead and still easily hold > 60 fps. unless you just prefer 120fps above all else.

of course I need 120 hertz because I have a 120 monitor and when you get used to that level it’s impossible to play at 60 :slightly_smiling_face:

precisely. Not even just gaming but moving mouse even on a 60hz screen is sluggish as hell, especially doing any kind of graphics or video work once you get used to 120. It’s same with going to iphone 120 then back to 60 is just as unbearable

Hi, I have been looking at picking up a Mac Studio. I have two primary uses - Lightroom and Warcraft.

I know Apple is not the first choice for gaming, but the combination of size, energy efficiency, and quiet provided by the Studio is really compelling. If I can have all that and still play WoW with a decent quality of life, I am going to be happy.

Reading this thread, I don’t think there is anything to worry about on the performance end.

Where I am a little concerned is with other threads in this forum e.g., the mouse wheel issue is something that seems like a fundamental feature that should just work, but isn’t getting the attention it should. Is this just life on a Mac? On the whole, no worse than usual over the years?

Not sure what mouse wheel error you referencing, but I would say by in large, you aren’t going to have any issues running WoW on the new Mac chips.

I use a mousewheel without issues in wow on an old logitech mouse. I wonder if some if issues people have are due to conflicts with 3rd party mouse software interfering or changing hardware inputs? I scroll all kinds of things in game with mouse wheel

Does M4 Max make it possible to play WoW with ray-traced shadows?

No. (10 char)

Someone on reddit replied to me when I asked how the 80core performed, see response:

"
I play on 5K ultrawide resolution with graphics turned up to Ultra. I get a minimum of 95FPS and a max of about 145FPS. It usually hovers around 109-110FPS. It’s really nice and fluid. I have the 80 core version."

I’ve been using Logitec products for years and I’ve never had problems. Currently using MX Anywhere 3. I also use Kensington Expert Mouse, which is a trackball. The “wheel” works fine though it lacks precision for fine adjustments.

I think it’s possible but Blizzard has to implement it.

Maybe, in MacOS 26? Based on yesterday’s announcements at WWDC, engadget (sorry, can’t share link here) claims that, “MetalFX Denoising ‘makes real-time ray tracing and path tracing possible in the most advanced games,’” according to Apple. That’s a feature of Metal 4, which will be part of macOS 26.

Apple’s Developer site has some videos, including “Explore Metal 4 games,” with more detail.
