so basically you arbitrarily decide to play a game with the poor dude even though you’ve already decided to give it to the other person, so you get his hopes up at getting a good item only to crush it when loot is already scarce enough as it is.
I use the addon ‘Personal Loot Helper’
- It will whisper anyone if there’s loot they don’t need that I do need.
- It will also tell the group if I get loot I don’t need.
I’ve always felt the best behavior is to spread the loot around. This is a social game, we’re all in here together. Best to be polite.
If something is a higher ilvl than what im wearing, i almost always keep it, unless equiping it would mean losing a large chunk of key stats (ie: -80 vers i dont care if i get an upgrade but -80 haste is a big no unless the ilvl difference is large).
If i dont need it i will ask if someone needs it, prioritizing the people with lowest ilvl in that slot. If nobody needs it and i am not playing with my priest (which has enchanting), i might ask if there is a enchanter and if someone has it i will give it to him. Altough i rarely do this because groups tend to disband quickly after completion.
Simply if something is not needed for me i prefer to give it to someone who can find it useful in some way other than vendor trash which i find not worth it.

This. I don’t pug M+, but if I did I would have the same rules: If I don’t need it, I ask in chat if anyone needs it and whoever says me first gets it.

I think you need to take off those pessimistic glasses and re-read what the OP posted. It is the polar opposite of what you accused them of.

So if two people need the item, how do you decide between the two if not by having them roll?
My raid group… NOT a PUG grant you… just has such a different attitude than I see so often in these forums threads.
We literally had two friendly arguments last night over people demanding that the loot go to the other person who they felt needed it more. 
In the past we’ve even done that with a PUG that we knew wasn’t coming back.

I, too, like to automate all my social interactions. Its a lot better to have an addon talk to people than haveto do it myself. Social!
I always trade it off.
I’d rather be kind in game as I am IRL then get 50 gold, while I daily get 2,000 just from callings.
That’s the wrong way to look at it.
The addon lets me know what people can use, and if something I can use has dropped. Without the addon I’d not notice half the time that I have something someone else could use.
Using it for yourself is one thing. Having it spam whispers to others is what people don’t like.
Typically I’ll put things up for roll or whatever. When people automatically assume I’m giving them gear or start rolling before I say something, k disenchant it infront of them
I ask if anyone needs it and then trade it. There’s nothing really worth transmogging, and I’m not going to keep if I have something better.
I see if anyone needs it as long as its not an upgrade for me, I’ll even pass over sidegrades if I’m able due to the ilvl system.
If I get a greedy person I typically blacklist them since I tank on most my characters anyway, like a druid we had last night who got a drop, a piece of leather traded to him, then got a third item, a trinket to drop that wasn’t an ilvl upgrade and just wanted to play with it even though a hunter in our group would’ve gotten a massive boost from it

I DE everything I get if I don’t need it. Sure I’ll take yours too.
Asking the group to roll THEN deciding who needs it more isn’t right. If you want to pick and choose just so that and give it to the person you want.
Why?
If they have loot they don’t need, something should let them know.
Really the addon should have spammed it into group chat if anyone has something they don’t need that someone else could use, not just whispers.
Get things properly sent around so everyone benefits.
They have eyes for that.
If I don’t need it. Hey anyone else want it.
I can make money off honor gear meh.
