What and OLD story.
Cause it certainly has not been a question in DECADES.
We had 3 mages in are raid the other day 2 frost and 1 fire mage. All 3 of us were holding middle of the pack with the fire mage the lowest of the bunch.
So while we weren’t the top we were not the lowest.
We were not the at the bottom of the dps meters.
This was on normal and heroic raid bosses using single target.

Fire is doing extremely well right now.
Ice sadly is low tier. Arcane is fighting for last place with ele shaman and moonkin (single target), ignoring aug which has been totally dumpstered.
We’ll see how things shake out after tuning on Tuesday.

I have no idea how you decided that mages were “The lowest DPS class”… But they’re not.
Frost is honestly even stronger than people give it credit for and is fire wasn’t so strong, more people would be playing it (I find it personally far easier to DPS as frost and certainly do better numbers as Frost)

Meh, I still think set tuning is coming, as arcane the mobility is the best it’s ever been. I’m content at my KSH/heroic level and I always have the option to switch to fire if I want to go hard.

with recent tuning all 3 specs are middle of the pack damage-wise. but mage has such a great kit, it will still be brought even if not top damage

Frost and fire are great in M+ and in raid with arcane a bit behind.
Not the weakest dps class by any means. Why is it always “If we aren’t top we are last” mentality. Mage is fine.

Fire is the most unenjoyable the spec has ever been. The talent tree is a disaster. 58 talents for living bomb. Phoenix flames is horrible. The scorch execute buff is clunky, move the buff into pyro blast. We just want to cast fire blast and pyro blast and occasionally a fire ball. That’s it. I’ll be content with this until the end of time.

Frost and Arcane are both middle of the pack in dungeons. (Arcane is extremely dependent on their cooldowns to do good AoE thought). Fire is among the top DPS for M+
In raids fire is very strong on any cleave/aoe fights. Arcane is about middle of the pack at the moment and Frost is solidly behind Arcane by pretty much all metrics. All three mage specs however struggle on pure single target.
In summary: Frost and Arcane are doing okay. Not amazing, but okay, and still leaving a lot to be desired for single target. Fire is crushing in M+, and puts a strong show on cleave fights in raid, but also falls behind on pure single target.
