At this point, Stormwind has been a longer central member in real life and in-game. I prefer the lion.
And that’s fine if you do.
I don’t know at this point though, how do you make a different logo to encompass all alliance races? It’s been the identity for the game so long.
I’ve noticed it is used along side the lion at times. I believe in BFA it’s on the alliance siege towers. I always liked it. A reminder of some living Lordaeron people in Stormwind.
I don’t really view it as an Alliance or Horde symbol though. Mostly a token of a past age that holds significance for those former citizens, regardless of what faction they now reside in.
I do dislike the lion though… I wouldn’t mind seeing the icon updated to look less fluffy.
If you’re referring to the grand marshall shield or whatever the heck it’s called, it doesn’t have the lordaeron insignia. The only other shield that I know of that has it is the “crest of Loradaeron” and that’s dungeon loot that can go to either faction.
Correction- another shield has it, “something wayward footman” and it’s the red SC version.
i agree with this, i wish i could use the gilnean banner
The Lordaeron “L” symbol feels like going backwards for both factions in ways I actively dislike.
The Forsaken, who may have the best claim to all things Lordaeron at this point, would still seem like they’re clinging to a past and identity that is well and truly behind them. The “L” was a symbol for a kingdom that worshipped the Light, and lead humanity. Lordaeron is no longer that place and Lordaeron’s people are no longer that.
As for the Alliance, it’s already been pointed out that most of the Grand Alliance of Lordaeron has nothing to do with the current Alliance. More importantly, most of the current Alliance has nothing to do with the Grand Alliance of Lordaeron. It’s exclusionary, it’s irrelevant, and it leads to entitled humans trying to claim Forsaken territory.
That symbol may remain on loot that lets anyone play out the fantasy they want. It shouldn’t be encouraged.
The Grand Alliance disintegrated into a rump state of the mutual Alliance of Stormwind and Ironforge. Everything else left, or, in the case of Lordaeron and Dalaran, was annihilated.
Stromgarde, Gilneas, and Quel’thalas bailed before the Third War even started. Gilneas did not return until the events surrounding the Cataclysm, and on much different terms. Stromgarde was destroyed by internal politics and only recently reclaimed.
Dalaran came back neutral, and while a bit of a roller coaster, largely remains independent.
The current Alliance has very little claim on the legacy of the Grand Alliance, both in terms of good and ill. I’ve long felt it both silly to make it a point to “reclaim” Lordaeron, as well as laying the sins of the Grand Alliance at the current Alliance’s feet, but that discussion is outside the scope of this thread. That said, keeping the “L” is a bit silly, save for the player based nostalgic feel from the old games.
I propose all heraldry be replaced with this far more symbolic and appropriate image.

obviously i’m not a non orc player, but I’ve always appreciated how abstract the Horde banner is.
Well, I don’t give three flying Noggenfogger Elixirs about unifying or anything like that.
But the other races are surely aware that they joined an already existing faction. The Alliance and the Horde already had symbols beforehand. With the Horde still having the same one. And the new Alliance taking the Lion as a symbol.
Just because a lot of people start to join a group, doesn’t mean they need to adapt their iconic symbol just to make them feel more included. It’s sort of like a club.
It’s a great symbol. I personally think it embodies the purpose of the Alliance- banding together to defend themselves from the threat of invaders and fighting to preserve peace- just like the original Alliance of Lordaeron did. It’s also used in remembrance of King Terenas and the victims of the plague.
It’s certainly a lot better than the Lion, which solely represents Stormwind.
I would like to see the L be used more.
