I’m not the one saying it’s newsworthy. I’m saying the gaming press found it to be newsworthy, because they literally wrote news about it. Just google the last Dragonflight cutscene and you’ll see gaming sites covering how bafflingly terrible it was.
And I’m just saying, it’s their opinion, it’s not an objective truth.
I figured that was implied.
I still think it’s relevant when people who write the news decide something is worth writing news about.
But we’re getting sidetracked. The story of Dragonflight was garbage. The characters act like pretentious blow-up dolls. The story beats were disjointed and unfocused. I still don’t know what an Oathstone does. The dialogue is quite honestly below the level of a high school play.
It honestly baffles me that WoW’s story continues to be this terrible. There is no excuse at this point.
There must be some serious institutional problems that led to this weird reverse synergy where a mega-corporation filled with people creates a product worse than what a 14-year-old would write on his own in his sketchbook.
The Oathstones were what originally helped give the Aspects their powers. At least that was implied in the War of the Scaleborn novel. But it looks like it was a plot point that was abandoned along with the Tyr storyline.
I personally enjoyed DFs story, so we’ll just have to agree to disagree on that front.
The fact that plots get abandoned so frequently is part of my point XD
It happens in nearly every MMO in existance. It’s not something unique to WoW. It’s not uncommon for storylines to shift last minute, or things to get cut because it wasn’t going to work with where the story was going.
Either way, nothing wrong with having differing opinions on things, I’m not saying DF is perfect, it’s not, it does have its issues. I just think a lot of those issues simply get overblown.
Most of them have literally been gushing about it. At worse I think the only truly negative coverage I saw was the ending.
There is no question the ending was bad. However I think for the most part there were other parts of the story(especially the more interpersonal one) have shined. Hell that seems to be the general consesus among the forums. Dragonflight is at worse a fine expansion. Maybe not Legion/Mist level but better then SL(admittedly that bar was underground)
That was the only really major complaint I saw too. Which is fair, it wasn’t the greatest cinematic ever. Like I said, I think a lot of things that some people complain about concerning DF get way overblown.
It is very unique to WoW in terms of the scale and magnitude of the problems. I have never played a major MMO that tried to have a story, with a story as bad as WoW.
I have never played a video game that tried to have a story, with a story as bad as WoW.
I watch cartoons that have better-constructed stories with better characters and more poignant themes than WoW. The Amazing World of Gumball has a better grasp of narrative and characterization than WoW. 12 Oz Mouse has a better grasp of esoteric themes and worldbuilding than the past few WoW expansions with their fractals and first ones and inconsistent BS.
I have never seen a single frame of Bluey, but I am near-certain it has a better grasp of storytelling than WoW.
Zerde, the ending was nothing unique to Dragonflight. It was just a single, concentrated blast of everything wrong with the expansion’s story at once.
If you like the interpersonal moments of Dragonflight, then I suggest you seek out more media because you’ll likely enjoy those moments even more. Dragonflight’s emotional depth is the size of a puddle. Think about your own connections with the people you care about, and I promise you that you’ll be able to write something more genuine, Zerde, and without the backing of a billion dollar mega-corp.
Because the bar is so low and for many people on the forums this is their “main” game so they have less to compare it against.
Dragonflight is my favorite WoW expansion in years and it’s what brought me back to the game. It’s also the expansion that FINALLY helped me find my main, after years of altaholism. I’ve even gotten into PvP, which is something I never thought I’d be interested in. DF is great.
So, I’m definitely not being a hater or being biased when I say that the story is laughable to anyone not trapped in the WoW bubble. Show these cutscenes to your non WoW-playing friends and see how they look at you in response.
ironically, worgen with tails is something we actually want
I consider that a negative rather than a positive. Nothing against Thalyssra—in fact, I quite like her—but I would like to see a Thalassian elf among the main cast who’s actually in love with another Thalassian elf, for once. Just to be different. (We used to have Lor’themar/Liadrin, but they chucked it out in favor of Lor’themar/Thalyssra.)
And some damn hairstyles that aren’t parasitic mullets!
Do you guys think that Story Writing will get better after Danuser is gone? Curious about the future of the wow’s lore right now.
Unfortunately… No.
That entire branch of the company needs a massive overhaul and have been in need for one since WoW’s inception.
The least worst story Blizzard have released recently, outside of the Saturday Nights Cartoons of Hearthstone, is the Diablo 4 story. And even that one is plagued with issues relating to characters and plot.
Magic 8-ball says… Reply hazy, try again
We’ll probably have less reality realigning nonsense. But better characterization, storylines and other developments? That’s more up to the quest design team then whoever is at the top.
I don’t actually read them myself, but watch youtube review channels by the poor bastards who do.
I haven’t played Diablo 4 but I did hear it was disappointing.
This post rules. WoW under Danuser has been written at a sub-young adult fiction level. It’s in the center of the earth. The bar has never been cleared. WoW’s weakness for basically it’s whole life under every story head has been interpersonal moments. Badly attempting to actually have more of them just highlights this more.
Someone name one moment in Danuser WoW’s A-plot that made you feel a single thing. I’ll wait! Yes there were two good story side quests (and some other positive plot elements like reintroducing Sabellian but oh man the Black Dragonflight story goes into “everyone is an idiot” territory FAST) in the B-plot with the Dragonmaw survivor and the Blue Dragonflight but I’d bet serious money they weren’t written by That Guy given they lack any of his hallmarks of saccharine nonsense. When one’s media diet is literally all children’s programming this is what happens. Not a single ounce of passion can be seen in ANY of his interviews. It was like a dark age (I know Afrasiabi largely sucks too given he started this train back in BFA prepatch).
It was boring and had no stakes. The expansions that damaged the franchise were mostly Bfa and TBC and that was the faults of Metzen and Afrasiabi.
