the alliance side of the realm this toon is one seems very dead/inactive. Can anyone suggest a realm that has a decent size alliance player-base that might be willing to help a noob?
There are 240 realms. I’d recommend checking out wow progress to see how many people are active on various realms. It will break it down by alliance/horde heavy or relatively balanced. As for friendly populations, that’s going to be partially your preference based on time zone and what you want to do within the game. Each server should have newcomer guides available, a lot of which are likely in friendly guilds that would welcome new members.
Stormrage and Sargeras are the top 2 for alliance. If your guildless, you will get random invites.
