There are multiple definitions of mary sue. One is a character that is the author placed into the story that tends to succeed often, but not at everything. The other is a hyper powerful character that is so strong they break the narrative - a lot of detective stories make this mistake, as do many fantasy series.
Many of the regular players on the wow “story” stage are the latter type - they may be the former type, too, but I don’t know the writers and can’t say.
Hell, some of the “story” characters even show up to boss killsteal from you, and have to be sidelined for whole patches or even xpacs because of how stupid strong they are.
So annoying, as is the ability of some bosses to conveniently remember they have a super stun when down to 10% health.

Why are you linking the only thing in this game that has ever made me cry?
They replay the cinematics in the Ardenweald questing. I had to skip them because I can’t take it again.
No, I am speaking of Nomi the Panda - one of the most loathed characters in all of WoW.
…Why do we literally need a second thread of this?

Wait, there was another thread on this?
This shines a light on my general disappointment in the greater themes of WoW lore. How contrived everything feels on the biggest stage. And how so often I’m standing on the sidelines watching it all happen. I prefer the stories I find myself in while leveling or doing interesting quest chains, because they are self-consistent plots with twists and turns that entertain, like reading a short story only you’re living it.
a Sylvanas is not a Mary Sue thread
“Sylvanas isn’t a Mary Sue”
Sounds a lot like this thread.
Ah, no… that’s a discussion of a character. This thread is a critique of the General Discussion forums, as well as the writing in WoW.

I believe there were some posts during Legion that called him “Dad sue”…
But anyways… yeah… these forums call anyone and everyone a Mary Sue just because someone doesn’t like the outcome of something in the lore, doesn’t like the character, or just felt like something else should have happened instead… it is rather annoying at this point…

how about the personal issue writters have with alliance lore in general?
cuz they are dumbed down constantly and always for “lore/game” purposes…
Khadgar didn’t make the list despite being extremely powerful.
I’d say the defining difference is that he has a genuinely likable personality. Same with Rexxar, chill dude.
Add Lilian Voss to the obnoxious character list in the OP. They should at least let you kill her on Alliance now that she’s no longer neutral.
Not familiar with it and judging by your description I’m better off.
Thanks for the cookie.
If you really want to kill Lilian Voss… just load into Scolomance… then during the fight to save her from the necromancer just wait and let him finish casting his little spell… then you can kill her…
Ahahaha!
I hope we never see him again. He is terrible, and ridiculously powerful to the point of breaking plotlines (much like Malfurion, Sylvanas, etc etc).
They don’t know how to write a memorable character without making them gods - and when by some mistake they do make a memorable character who doesn’t have deity-level power? They kill them.
