You can target things through world geometry unless there is an object placed in the world, like a rock, tree, building, et cetera.
It’s an engine limitation as far as I know and it has always been this way.
Edit: Probably should have read a few responses before saying anything.
It’s an old game, OP. They had a lot more limitations to work around back in the day when the original engine was built.
I can’t tell you how many Alliance I’ve killed in AV shooting through the hills at the GY by the bridge in DB, fact is if you can hit them they can also hit you, sounds pretty fair to me.

So when a frost mage throws a frozen orb it can be blocked by a terrain or a tiny plant or rock but then a hill doesn’t block spells. Hahahahaha.
Incorrect, in the case of orb.
It paths over the ground and if it doesn’t hit something will zip OVER the hill rather than through it, like targetted abilities do.
It’s just targetted abilities that are a bit funky.
LOS is horrible this xpac’s dungeons. There were much less problems in Legion as a whole. Not sure about bg’s.
LOS can be a blessing for kiting adds certain weeks, but for healers and dps it is usually a huge pain. You just learn to adjust.
The raytracing for Charge works this way too. It only measures horizontal distance as a result, which is why you can have a DH doublejump up a hill that’s too steep to actually climb but still Charge/Intercept to them.

Depends on the arc… Your spell can be thrown much like a ball. Gravity will naturally pull it down creating an arc that can hit you!
But if you use a boomerang, then we talkin’…
Shhhhh don’t tell them.
Inb4 “no path available” on charge just like leap.
Blizzard can be slightly inconsistent with what blocks LOS. I know in wsg there is a boulder which looks like it should block LOS, but we can shoot each other through it. Then there are these skinny trees out in the world which look like you can just shoot through, but they block LOS.
So just because you are behind a rock and or pillar does not actually mean you are behind a rock or pillar…
not if they are actually a boulder or a post, those don’t have anything to block you from being hit
Gotcha no rocks only boulders and no pillars only posts, sounds like a typical wow detail issue lol.
Nowwwww you gettin’ it!!!
Listen… don’t be so hard on yourself! Everyone struggles with LOS at the beginning. but, the more you know…
