Leveling in retail

I dunno, I heard a lot of people struggle on some quests in beta, but I also hear people struggle now. /shrug Both versions are pretty brainless if you ask me, one just takes longer.

Then I would be interested in what, specifically, your rotation was.

Because that was not my experience with this character. And I tried both numerous clean rotations and doubled spell rotations.

(Should be noted I do not have BfA.)

I guess my question, not to be one of those “go back to classic” people, is if Classic exists and has the leveling experience that you are looking for, then why would Retail’s leveling need to be changed.

Isn’t the point of having both is because of the different gaming experiences they offer? Wouldn’t that kind get lost if you started making both play kind of the same way.

Ahh, I got ya. However they did very little dmg at all. Like I said earlier, I hate leveling, but I hate mindless leveling even more. It’s like work. If I have a some stuff to do it actually goes by faster and is still more, “enjoyable” than if I was paid the same to stare at a blank wall for 8 hours. Sure staring at the wall would be easier but I’d rather have something to do that isn’t completely mindless. Either way I’d rather not be at work, and I’d rather not really level either. However if I have to do some “work” I’d rather it be more engaging/dangerous.

People have different concepts of what is fun. I like levelling because of the quests, stories, zones, artwork and music, and the sense of satisfaction you get as your level goes up. The challenge part comes at max level with your choice of content.

I don’t play wow to level. It’s one of my least favorite things. However, if it has to be a thing than I’d rather it be less mindless.

I suppose that makes sense, but it really doesn’t answer my question. You already have a less mindless option for leveling in classic, and if you’re looking to play retail. Well, you just said you don’t like leveling… Isn’t it better for it to be as fast and as low impact as possible?

I’m fine with it being faster. But I’d rather not be bored out of my mind. Some people would rather do nothing for 8 hours and get paid. I don’t like work, but I’d rather be doing something than twiddling my thumbs for 8 hours even though that is “easier”. Everyone is different I suppose.

The ‘danger’ is in swarms of mobs. The game was designed the past few expacs around mass engagements, single mobs are basically nothing (unless you’re only specced for multi-target).

Are you pulling them one at a time or something? Leveling my mage I definitely got into some hairy situations where I needed cooldowns to survive. I made my own leveling experience that was not just ice lance or frostbolt spam, and the bonus was that I would be doing kill/collect quests much faster by rounding up enemies and burning them down. I would also intentionally go after elite quests (recommended players 3/5) and take them on solo as those often require you to use your class’ whole toolkit.

Taking on packs of mobs in the world is great practice for endgame because you’ll often be required to deal with packs of adds in raids or be forced to kite mobs in M+. And if you’re not opposed to PvP (or perhaps even if you are) leveling in Warmode is even better since it’s faster and you get a new set of talents to play with, plus has that “sense of danger” you seem to want more of.

Fair enough. I’m not trying to come off as judgmental. I don’t have an issue with your opinion at all. Just trying to understand it. Maybe I’ve just gotten lazy in my old age, but I really do prefer how relaxed it’s gotten.

Well one new issue is that when I copied that lowbie mage to the PTR I no longer had blizzard, (not till a later level). So that isn’t really an option. However, I get your point. Unfortunately I also found that mob leashing is really limited now and gathering a ton of mobs and keeping them isn’t super feasible unless the mob density is super high (not really a thing in most lower areas of the game).

PTR, things are different. Shadowlands is focusing more on single-mob pulling and less mass damage than the other ones. It’ll still be there, just not as heavily.

I can see the appeal of watching netflix and just chillin’ while you play, or maybe zoning out. It just sort of becomes a background activity then for me and my pleasure is derived more from the podcast I’m listening to or the other activity. With the current iteration of leveling I can definitely see getting really high and playing though. That might be fun I guess. >.<

Netflix and WoW is a pretty big staple of mine. I just leveled a couple of different toons to 120 while binging through Avatar, Korra, Dragon Prince, and the 3 Tales of Arcadia shows. I like to think of it as the world’s laziest multitasking.

lol, fair enough

Some feel its too slow because they’re used to retail being too fast.

If we were able to travel to the store on a mini rocket belt then wanted to try traveling by car, we would say it’s too slow even though “too slow” worked fine for decades.

People before that were used to traveling by horse and buggy. Before that, they walked.

Fair, but I’m not sure how that plays into things. I never played vanilla, but I do remember BC and Wrath. I’ve only enjoyed the continued QoL perks as the game’s advanced. I’m glad there are options for people who want to go back but now that cars are around I don’t want to walk anywhere lol.

This is just not true, lol. I’m not saying classic is hard or championing it in any way, but to say there’s no danger in classic is simply absurd. I’d love to meet the guy who could succeed in getting a max level character with 0 deaths because if anyone has succeeded in doing it they are far and few between.

No fault to you at all. I can easily understand how anyone who never played vanilla cannot find the appeal to classic. If I were told I could stop driving my car and get around on horse/buggy, I would probably pass.
