None of the contemporary MMOs are hailed by players as good either.
I remember this. I remember literally leveling from 40 to 80 via pure AVs.
I hate they nerfed it.

I think if the only care is the endgame, then I can see that but many people there actually play for the story and journey!

No game ever will be that popular again, chasing that is a fool’s errand. WoW was the big social media MMO of its time, other platforms like Twitter, discord, Instagram and other such sites have removed that novelty from wow. History won’t repeat itself in our lifetimes, get over it and move on.
Then buy a boost
or keep leveling the way it is because it’s fast… this isn’t vanilla, you want a grindy leveling experience go there. We want to have fun and WOW’s leveling experience has never been good or special… at least right now, it’s fast.
Boosts are not max level and no not paying money for each character.
Go play classic.

Because you have the power to make it harder yourself. No reason to inflict what you like on everyone else.
Level naked, or like someone else suggested: level in grey starter gear. Then if it’s still too easy, get naked, and turn off your exp gain.
You already have the solution. Use it.
No need for Blizzard to change anything.

I play both. I think both have good aspects. I don’t think we should throw away DF leveling just because Classic exists.
Play the way you want and I’ll play the way I want.
There is nothing wrong with DF leveling atm… just because it’s easy, doesn’t make it an issue.

There’s nothing right with it either. It just seems like some procedural thing no one really wants to do but we kinda put up with it for some unknown reason.

and that’s how people want it… if it’s not going to be fun, let it at least be fast because the end-game has always been the goal of WOW and that’s when the game truly begins.

Leveling has never been fun, if it isn’t going to be fast… it has to be fun and WOW leveling has NEVER been fun.
