We better get a hybrid ranged support tank healer with melee bow casting or I’ll riot!
But to be honest, I was kinda just hoping we would get updates to actually finish the development on our first two specs before getting a third. It feels like I’m playing an early alpha class where the devs are just “trying new things out and seeing what sticks,” except this is really just it.
If Blizzard ever does add a 3rd spec to evoker it will NOT be tank. Blizzard already said Evoker wouldn’t get a tank spec.
I also don’t think it will be a support spec. This is because WoW simply isn’t setup for support specs.
Adding a new role to the game of “support” and giving it to evokers would upend game balance in all group PVE content.
If Evokers are the only support spec in the game they would either be required for every raid or dungeon (which is bad game design), or
support evokers would be useless for every raid or dungeon (which is also bad game design).
The only way to reasonably add a 4th role to the game besides tank, healer or DPS, would be to offer many different support specs spread across many classes. That way no single class becomes required. This would be a monumental change to game balance and encounter design, with probably little return for Blizzard. I do not think it will ever happen.
That leaves Blizzard possibly adding another range dps spec or a melee dps spec, … or not adding any 3rd spec.
Between range and melee, I’d prefer to see a new melee spec. Personally, I only play ranged specs so probably wouldn’t play it. But Dracthyr are supposed to be like dragons and dragons fight in melee. Not having a melee option for dragons just feels weird.
However, if I had to bet I think Blizzard will simply leave Evokers at 2 specs. It’s by far the least effort for them and is consistent with how classes have developed over WoW’s History.
In the entire history of the game, Blizzard has never added a truly new spec to any class. And before anyone mentions it, I do not consider “Guardian druid” a truly new spec. All Blizzard did there was take the previous bloated feral spec and break it into 2 separate specs “feral” and “guardian” when they switched talent systems.
Or they could just make it a healer, with their main source of contribution being support abilities.
We already have a ton of support abilities in the game, and a new spec could lean more towards those and less on personal performance.
Any healer has to be able to fulfill the role of being the only healer in a mythic+ group. A support character with crappy healing as a secondary role doesn’t fulfill this requirement.
However, it would be possible to add a spec whose primary role is tank, healer or dps, with a secondary role of support.
Lust has been in the game since the start. Initially only shamans had it. However, as WoW progressed, Blizzard realized that having such a critical buff in the hands of only 1 character class was bad design as it made that class mandatory. That’s why lust is now spread out over several classes, so no one class is required.
The closest thing to a unique support class these days is probably a warlock with healthstones, gate and wipe recovery). Even then, support is still just a secondary role for warlocks. Their primary role is DPS.
