Maybe chill on having 10+ layers
We had big servers back in the day as well that didn’t even need layers, let alone 10+ of them. Empty zones makes the game look dead and having large vibrant visible populations makes the game more alive

Without layers we would have
And the downsides of layers are: I can’t see everyone
Having actually played on a dead realm I can confidently say that even with 50 layers anni wouldn’t seem dead.
We need MORE layers, not fewer!
every problem with Classic from the start has its roots with Blizzard’s decision to make the server cap 10k+ instead of the 2500 the original game was and then using layering to bandaid the problem they created
We need like 20 small servers capped at 2500-3000 but people think they’d have a “dead realm” if that happened and Blizzard doesn’t want to spend the money
People would think it’s a dead realm because it would be.
With how wow populations in general fluctuate this would not be feasible anymore. They semi tried to attempt this with the original classic where they were spitting out servers left and right and that proved to be a disaster.
Too many realms results in a large majority of said realms becoming dead. We’ve seen it time and time again. There is a reason we only have 2 realms, they are being more careful.
Layers are a really good solution. At a cost of a slight inconvenience with not seeing other people. They could certainly improve the layer transition/UI experience with displaying your realm and potentially allowing a more reliable way of changing layers, for sure.. But I’ll take packed realms with layers any day instead of rolling and investing my time into some other realm, and 2 phases in its a ghost town.
Ya if people think they are seeing a tank shortage now or that they can’t find groups for heroics or content for entry level stuff now it would literally be nonexistent on a smaller server
Layers are necessary because of FORCED Megaservers.
Megaservers are a cancer. Layers are chemo.
Chemo sucks, a lot, but it’s the best of your choices once you already have cancer.
Not this big. More layers, fewer servers is a trade off. On the upside, it results in most players on the same realm(s), 24-hour server activity, and no need for transfers as a service, which could destabilize communities or entire servers. Whether it’s worth the downsides seems to be up to individual perspective.

The cancer is spelled R-o-g-u-e-s.
C-h-e-m-o the Rogues, STAT.
People hate layers but the amount of crying that world happen without them …
You need to define “back in the day” are we talking 2006 when the shine of wow kept people playing even doing kara for the whole expansion and never going to any 25 man content or 2022 classic when the game had been on a private server for 20 years. Or are we just talking classic in general that even though it had like 20 servers only 4 were “populated” and people waited 4 hours in a queue to play because if there was no queue “servers dead”
Single server and layers is the best solution otherwise we will see the rise of community mega servers.
the original 2019 classic had max server caps of over 10k and allowed server transfers which killed all the realms
original 2004 vanilla had a server cap of 2500 and didn’t have realm transfers. Mysteriously all the realms didn’t die.
It’s not mysterious at all. It was 2004 and when gaming evolved into the modern day gaming that we know now they did end up dying. Which is why retail now is essentially just a single server.
You honest to god don’t understand the difference between gaming in 2004 and now? You really think that all of what happened in 2004 is going to happen now as long as they release the same server type?
Brother…..
Yeah you used to be able to /who people on the other faction with your alt. Then Log onto your summoners and summon your hunters out to the zone they were in. Then spam your eagle eye macro with their character name in unitscan. Takes about 3-4 mins per zone. Then once you find them summon the boys out and camp them for three business days.
Great times.
As opposed to the single faction megaservers people created themselves on purpose by buying server transfers in 2020? A completely player driven phenomenon which resulted in 99% of Classic servers being unironically dead realms?
You think we forgot?
We need more layers, not less… what lol
So confused by this post, what do you mean the world’s empty??
They couldbe on low levelers. Areas before 58 can be more empty. And I was recently in Silithus to get my 2 levels on the boosty. and leveling skinning so she could skin in tbc to make some money.
Not many people there but I was not complaining. A few months back kill twilight quest was a very difficult quest. 10’s of alliance and horde cleaned them all out lol. Lots of wait for respawn happened.
Since not a lot of people there now, it was kill them 1 by 1 till 10 texts done no issues.
Now I hit the BE 62 paladin this weekend too. and some parts of marsh questing I’d have liked alliance to be layered off to not be there lol. They were legit levelers and its not their fault spawn rates suck so I was understanding about it. it was still irksome as hell in time though lol.
