Layers and Character Creation Adjustments on Select Realms

I am confused what the restriction to transferring to Grobbulus is does that mean you can’t transfer at all?

So you may have started late or simply may have forgotten but there were free transfers to Earthfury about a month into C.lassic. I know because I wanted to reroll Alliance so rather than deleting my existing characters I just transferred them to Earthfury instead. This was in like September, maybe early October.

I wonder if anyone at Blizzard has run the numbers on this because my hypothesis is tthat free server transfers did nothing other than help people quit the game. Put another way: I suspect the rate at which people still have an active sub 1, 2 or 3 months after taking a free transfer is a lot lower than for people who don’t.

This is going to be interesting to watch unfold because you’re not going to please everyone. Any of the options (no TBC, character copy to a TBC server, only fresh TBC servers, etc) are going to make some people happy and some people unhappy.

Personally I think they should be expecting to roll out fresh servers at least every 2 years.

I certainl ythink it’d be a bad idea to allow transfer from one of the current servers to a fresh server 2 years from now, agreed. But transfer within that pool of fresh servers? Why not?

We already have the precedent of different rulesets (PvP/PvE, RP/non-RP). I’m not sure “no TBC” is a necessarily a good ruleset as I think any Classic-only server will eventually die. Maybe that’s OK and they can simply merge them. I don’t know.

But I’d really like to see a “no multiboxing” ruleset option.

I think they should’ve had faction-specific queues for Classic. They clearly didn’t want to. For a fresh server where you’re otherwise planning for it not to be overpopulated, it seems kind of pointless and it won’t cause servers not to be faction imbalanced.

I don’t get the hate on layering though, particularly to handle the unprecedented demand from everyone being stuck at home. What else was Blizzard to do? Just make everyone sit through 6 hour queues? People aren’t going to transfer (mostly). It’s too high-risk. They’re too ivnested in their server and guild by this point.

What they should do is make transfer low-risk. Allow people to change their mind (free of charge) and possibly try several servers until they find one they like.

You could even try paying people to leave. In the very least, there should be an option to transfer your entire account rather than $25/toon. If you have 7 toons, why would you pay $175 to move? It’s silly.

Do we know when they might open up these realms for new players? I have a few buddies that want to start playing classic but Earthfury is locked for new character creation unless you have a toon on there already.

As somebody from Fairbanks, im having a hard time with this as my good IRL friend finally (after convincing him for months) to play classic, he finally made an account. Couldn’t make a character on my server and im pissed off.

I log in and constantly see multi-boxxing accounts or bots and nothing is being done about it. I want him to play on my server, but now it’s getting to a point if it’s really worth it to start all over again. I have an amazing guild, tons of in game and IRL friends on Fairbanks, a fully decked out t2 mage, tons of high level alts. My friend cant play on my server where I have all of this, because Blizzard cannot meter multi-boxxing accounts and bots? COME ON!

Same thing here.

Should of came in March when the server was medium. Now unless the refugees go back to incendiuos there’s no room for them

Earthfury being locked is preventing me from transferring and playing with my guild. To say this sucks is an understatement.

That’s nice. Multiboxing isn’t against ToS. I mean I’d be happier if that were the case but it isn’t.

Bots is another story. Report that every time you see it.

It’s kind of amazing how many of these “friends” come out of the woodwork when something like this happens. It makes me pretty skeptical tbh. But let’s assume what you’re saying is true. If it’s a choice between your friend not being able to start on your server now or me and a whole bunch of people having to wait 6 hours to log on to a server we’ve been playing on since the beginning, it’s not even close.

Granted that’s layering but layering is there to handle the unexpected influx of people playing because of coronavirus. At some point they want to turn layering off and that’ll be impossible if more and more people keep going to the busiest of servers.

As it should be. We did not ask to be barraged and have our server invaded and taken over. The real solution is to send all the refugees home and lock incendious instead. Also they can all go back because incendious is open for horde transfers

If you think you have an overpop problem due to bots and multiboxers, you will have to rethink that.

You dont have 7,000 multibox accounts logging in, not to mention they have no special queue guarantee, they might get 1 account logged in, they might get none logged in, same as everyone else.

The bot population is not that large, that would be an absolute fail on the part of the bot operators, they would have to start killing each other in pvp combat just to get rid of competition, not to mention they would draw a giant amount of attention to themselves.

Most of what is in the queue is normal single queuing people who want to play.

Now a couple things about this post, and ones that are almost identical are this

How is it that on the very day of server locks, everyones wife mother girlfriend boyfriend grandma cousin uncle neighbor mailman hooker dog groomer BFF etc decides THAT is the day they will begin WoW and go to said locked server?

A server that had been experiencing GROWING login queues for some time already, and may have had in excess of 6 hours login queue time?

And yet Bubbah was just about to log in there when the unthinkable happened?

Was it world Besties join WoW day?
Just seems suspect that everyones bestie decided that day to begin WoW?
Maybe i am cynical?

All my bestest ever IRL friends play WoW on ABC server.
One of our besties ever is coming to play.
SERVERS ARE LOCKED

OMG what do we do?
Hello? If these are all such good real friends, the answer is simple.
We will all go roll level 1’s where ever our bestie is able to play at, because out IRL friend is more important than what cartoon character we are playing on.

And if there is any answer but that, one needs to seriously reevaluate what one calls a friend, maybe even reevaluate if They are actually a friend.

Or maybe i have an unreasonable expectation of the word friend?

This. Seriously. True friends adapt together and find solutions to problems together, maybe not ideal solutions, but they work with what they have and figure out how they can still do things together.

This is the difference between friends who actually play in not so optimal a situation, but they still get to play, and friends to complain on the forums where nothing is going to change as quickly as they want it to. Meanwhile, they could have spent that time having fun on another server or doing something else.

What a beautiful sentiment…But this isn’t about “true friendship” if I’ve known someone for 15 years, get them to finally play the game and they are locked from my server is it unreasonable to be upset about this? Is it unreasonable to make a forum post about wanting to change this specific limitation? Can you not play with your friend away from all the resources and social structures you’ve built on your server AND take issue with the thing that is preventing you from accessing those things? I think it’s more unreasonable to attack someone claiming without knowing them, that they must not be “true friends”.
Servers are in the state that they are in imo due only to the huge migration of Players. Preventing new players from creating a character on the server was a measure to bring down a population (as people quit playing everyday) and if there is no new characters coming in then you see the population dip. But this is just a drop in a bucket for most of these servers, as the servers have become so bloated from TRANSFERS even with these measures it will be sometime before population sizes move to the point of no layers.
I really don’t think that had they locked servers from transfers but left new character creation open we would see a meaningful difference to population.

That goes against their own best interests. Its a business after all and is ruled by revenue over all else. If they fixed the population issues and connected realms together, they would lose all paid realm transfer revenue. Thats a bad business deal for them.

Our realm made a sacrifice to clean up our population in order to avoid queues, unfortunately your realm was affected (not our fault)… However, we (refugees…great term by the way) should not be punished for transferring realms to avoid adding layers for population management.

Dear friends, my server appears to have 3 layers, although I’m not sure if it works in a dynamic way in the sense that it is reduced to only 2 or 1 layers when population count declines (e.g., at 2am on a Tuesday).

Question: Is Blizzard seriously considering reducing max layer count and/or removing layers entirely once the amount of players logging in declines from this insane spike we’ve recently witnessed?

Yes but now we got ques and then layers to solve the ques. While the home server doesn’t. All that reopening is going to do is add to the issues once layers leave as anyone who was to late to transfer will try to come to EF . What they should do is send some guilds back to try to restablize incendius instead of add to the instability of Earthfury.
Also I am pretty sure most transfers had no interest in EF when it was a medium server pre free transfers. They wanted the big server life but now with the the full tag the interest in the server will only grow pushing the natives further to the side or away.

I mean you pretty much explained why in this very same question. Complaints are cropping up because the servers are now locked for new players were before they were not locked, so there was no reason to take issue before. It’s pretty likely that everyday classic has new people joining up with their friends and seeing as these locked servers have the highest populations you’re probably gonna see the majority of new “friend referrals” there. Not to mention the number of posts is hardly a fraction of a single server let alone the entire player base.

Said servers were experiencing growing queue times leading up to 6+ hour queues.
That issue had been ongoing and growing, even people on unaffected lower pop realms were aware of it.

We all knew there were issues, we all knew something was going to have to happen.
Blizz even communicated in regards to it.
The locks were no surprise.

all they did was force the ppl off to destroy other servers. the ppl who free xfered off skeram to incendius…oh look they just arrived on netherwind last night. JOY. they fixed nothing. cycle repeats again. so now incendius is 80%+ally, and went from 12k pop to less than 4k pop, and everyone came to netherwind which was 2k and is now proably 8k as the trasnfers are still goign on. blizz still hasn’t locked or stopped the transfers one way or the other. so broken server #3 from teh exact same group of people who I’m sure if they look at the logs they can track, as it seems to be the groups mission to use the 2 free transfers and the paid one to do this. and its a group of guilds all from the same original server who move in unison doing this. i mean c’mon! but as i always say you can’t fix stupid. so my sub is now cancelled…
