its insane how this isnt baseline anymore.

Well you are, you are trying to compare total sales in a conversation about concurrent players.

You donā€™t know the concurrent players of zelda and afaik we donā€™t know total sales of bg3.

So yeah, you seem confused and are weirdly trying to downplay one of the top games on steam, everā€¦ for reasons? Insecurity perhaps idk.

While I like df blizzard is dropping the ball in most of their products along with moist triple A games. Ellen Ring and Bg3 prove that the old ways are incrediblyv profitable.

In a sane world Bg3 wound be standard but exceptional.

Obviously.

But it really highlights the difference between a game company out to make great games and one whose singular mindset is profitability. Bobby Kotick couldnā€™t care less about the means by which his fortune is generated, while Larian is still owned (mostly) by its original founder and his wife.

And while the discrepancy in resources is clear, I have to wonder - how much of Activision and companyā€™s resources are actually focused on making quality games, and how much are, by the customerā€™s experience, wasted on ideas like monetization and ā€œrecurrent user spending?ā€ Having extra 0s in your war chest means absolutely nothing if so much of it is going to subvert the work the rest of it is going towards.

Now, Iā€™m sure Activision and EA and all the other AAA development studios do have people who truly do want to make the greatest games possible. But, so long as thatā€™s not the objective of their leadership, itā€™ll never happen.

Sorry Jimmy, I know you went into this line of work dreaming of making the next Ocarina of Time, butā€¦ the bosses say cheaply made Skinner-boxes festooned with loot boxes, microtransactions, battle-passes, and virtual currency have a higher profit margin, soā€¦

Oh noes, a WoW killer, havenā€™t seen one of those before.

Itā€™s not insecurity for me to think concurrent players is not much of a stat to brag about, when itā€™s more than obvious BG3 isnā€™t a single player rarity in having a good amount of players in its first two weeks. Apparently, itā€™s only common sense to me that if a game outsells BG3 itā€™s likely to have as many, if not more, concurrent players its first two weeks when players are still hyped.

The very fact you resorted to insults tells me everything.

sigh, another thread about a terrible game that everyone loves because its ā€˜completeā€™ horrible turn based dice rolling everytime iwanna do something. you cannot and will not compare the two games. baldurs gate will be dead in 3 months

Oof I still have fond memories of playing WC3 LAN with friends during my college days. Especially back when the custom maps were so much more popular

Sorry i didnt like Baldurā€™s Gate 3, but i did enjoyed playing the first two in the past years.

I dont care what the score say about that game, some like it and some dont.

Btw there should be off topic page, that where this thread belong that is not related to World of Warcraft.

Didnā€™t they take like ten years to make the game?

The drama is made up for clickbait.

Devs just said you canā€™t expect games to be as good as BG3, which is true because not every game can have a 6 year development cycle and 3 years of EA. The shareholders wouldnā€™t allow it.

Of course this just means other developers are bad, greedy, lack passion, etc. People also acting like BG3 is the only good game in the last 10 years when you have multiple bangers every year.

Development began in 2016 I believe. So almost a decade. Still a way longer development time than the vast majority of studios get to develop their games.

Hello, I see you replied to the thread. Baldurā€™s Gate 3 was in development for around 6 years while Diablo 4 was in development for around 11! Diablo 4 has like zero endgame, much, much less story content, and apparently putting in extra stash tabs will cause the game to implode in on itself like a singularity, haha! At least the in-game store with highly expensive skins still works!

Thanks for your post and have a great day!

Diablo 4 absolutely did not start development in 2012. Stop talking out your behind. But yes, Diablo 4 is trash.

Larian made Divinity and Divinity 2. They actually crank out content. Baldurā€™s Gate 3 has something like a 100-120 hour single player campaign with so much variability that no two playthroughs are exactly the same. More variance than Mass Effect or Dragon Age.

It should serve as a wake-up call to the rest of the industry.

Hello, I see you replied to my post. Diablo 4 was originally being planned after the release of Diablo 3! The second planned expansion for Diablo 3 was cancelled and teams were moved over to early planning for Diablo 4! This was around 2012-2013, haha!

Thanks for your post and have a great day!

How so? BG3 isnā€™t even the first good game this year. Again, yaā€™ll acting like BG3 is the only good game ever made.

The only way the people with actual power will care about BG3 is if it made way more money than other games filled with transactions that are also good.

Early planning =/= actual development.

But yeah anyway, Diablo 4 couldā€™ve been a fine game had it not actually been made by Blizzard.

Hello, I see you replied to my post. If thatā€™s the case, then development for Diablo 4 took 9 years and is still garbage, haha!

Thanks for your post and have a great day!

BG3 is easily the best RPG Iā€™ve played since pre-2010. I guess Witcher 3 was kinda close but ultimately BG3 beats it out.

Microtransactions only matter as long as people care enough about your game to buy them. Take wow as an example: Why even buy a token? All you need to purchase are consumables and repairs. BoE gear is generally awful.
