So I was on an alt and saw someone LFM for RFK. I have several alts ready to go, so I whisper the guy and ask what they need since I could bring basically anything. He tells me a tank would be great. So I swap to my warrior (who’s arms spec, but that doesn’t really matter at this level) and get an invite. So here I am in group with 2 druids, both feral but one was gonna heal, and 2 arms warriors. I’m like, “really guys?”.
There’s not a shortage, just nobody wants to do it.
The only way to help fix it, is to refuse to tank for other warriors under most circumstances. When I’m on my war, I will not join a group that has a warrior already unless its a friend/guildie. If every tank did this, then these dps only warriors would be forced to learn to tank, or become social butterflies if they wanted a group.
that is hilarious… I rolled a healer because my buddy wanted to go tank… by lvl 40 every time we would do a dungeon I would get a tell “try to get a tank, if you cant find one then ill do it”
I should have rolled the Tank I was a tank in vanilla it would have been easier.
needless to say I started a druid and I have no intention of looking for a tank
People just sap the appeal of tanking dry. If you tank, they only want you to roll on tanking loot, even if most people aren’t even interested in specializing in high end tanking. The only way to really get comfortable with tanking is to actually do low level dungeons as a tank until you familiarize yourself, because if you try that in a higher level pug people will ditch you or pull packs for you while you still got your training wheels on. A lot of people skip the low level learning opportunities given to them because they don’t want to be criticized by a mage spamming arcane explosion.
Well except that just because you play a class that can tank, doesn’t mean you can tank. That’s always been my complain with the LFG system, you have people queue as a tank who can’t really tank.
There are filters for tanks.
#1) plays a class that can tank. #2) Can actually play a tank. #3) Feels like tanking at the time.
Same goes for healers.
As you well know, tanking in classic is not like tanking in retail.
As for me, I’m a terrible DPS. Always have been…no matter the game. You can give me the most OP FOTM DPS class with BIS gear and I’ll still come in below average compared to anyone else. Just because I play a class that can DPS does not mean I can DPS in an effective manner.
See what I mean? If a DPS chooses to assist in the role of tanking this is what the community expects of them. The DPS spec guy can’t get DPS loot because he puts on a shield. It’s a problem.
I would absolutely roll on any loot that is an upgrade for my character as the tank. If the group is snarky about it, I am sure that I could get a different group and complete the entire instance in the time it would take for the first group to find a replacement tank.
Yah I dont get it either. It’s the easiest role to play yet people won’t do it. I’m leveling a Druid now(currently 42) and I can’t believe how many warriors and other druids I pug that refuse to tank. Makes me laugh even more when they are spamming lfg channel for hours looking for a tank.
Call me old fashioned, but if you join as a group as a specific roll, you roll on that role’s gear and nothing else. We actually gkicked a guy yesterday after he joined an arena run as a healer and rolled (and won) on the caster belt.
It’s already hard enough for DPS to find a group, and you want to make it even harder on them by also claiming their loot. It would be better if you just charged people gold to run them since that’s a smaller tax than taking their gear.
Here’s the thing though. Many warriors want to play and gear up as the role they intend on playing at endgame. If they were to bite the bullet and tank, people would likely get butthurt if they were to roll on DPS gear during the run. I am fine with people only playing the role they want to play.
Another factor to consider is that many (most?) do not recall the layout or pulls of an instance, and want to get a feel for it prior to committing to tanking. I know I do. Especially the ones that I may have only done a couple times during vanilla while leveling up, as opposed to the “endgame” dungeons where you run them repeatedly. I am happy enough to tank leveling dungeons, but I make it VERY clear that I have forgotten more than I remember, and we WILL be taking our time and not cleaving.
It’s not other people’s loot. It’s for whoever is going to use it, period. Classes with multiple roles need multiple sets of gear. A warrior doesnt tank in pvp, or while grinding out in the world, or while dpsing in a raid.
MS>OS is a cancer, designed to try and screw over classes who need multiple different sets to be functional, namely Druids, Shamans, Paladins, Warriors, and Priests.
