Wondering now lol , World of Warcraft Subscriptions Are About to Get More Expensive for Some Gamers

In light of recent events, Blizzard announced that World of Warcraft is about to get more expensive in some parts of the globe. While only specific regions and audiences will see these adjustments, the impending changes did not sit well with gamers globally, especially considering the affected countries in question.

Though [the price of video games and subscriptions has generally increased since World of Warcraft first launched in 2004, due to inflation and other factors, the game’s recurring monthly subscription in most parts of the globe has remained relatively unchanged. In the United States, the recurring monthly subscription cost for World of Warcraft remains at $14.99 USD, with recurring subscriptions for multiple months at a time having a slight discount on a per-month basis, such as a three-month subscription going down to $13.99 per month before applicable taxes. However, as times change, so do the costs of maintaining a game such as Blizzard’s long-running MMORPG. However, for gamers in two countries, the costs are sadly increasing.

According to a Blizzard forum post, gamers in both Ukraine and Turkey will see the cost of a World of Warcraft subscription will change starting on July 5, 2023. At the time of writing, the price of a one-month World of Warcraft subscription in these nations is 149 Turkish lira (TRY) and 299 Ukrainian hryvnia (UAH). However, the cost of these subscriptions will increase to 199 TRY and 389 UAH per month in July, along with other price increases on World of Warcraft services such as the Dragonflight expansion and other microtransactions.

While exchange rates pit the lira and hryvnia at around $9 to $10 USD respectively, one Wowhead user pointed out that the true cost was measured in purchasing power parity (PPP), which put the increased equivalent cost at upwards of $41 to $46 USD by comparison. Suffice it to say, the price increase and the timing of the announcement did not sit well with World of Warcraft players at all. On social media, players condemned the move as a way for Activision Blizzard to capitalize on the situations in Ukraine and Turkey, while painting [the company’s CEO Bobby Kotick in a more negative light.

Other users chalked it up to [the inevitable cost of inflation that has affected gaming globally but sympathized that the timing of these price increases was not ideal. However, given the fact that the purchasing power of the lira and hryvnia respectively remain in flux, only time will tell what the long-term effects will be for World of Warcraft players in Turkey and Ukraine.

“Turkey’s inflation rate was 85.51 percent in October 2022” according to Statista.

They would be crazy not to increase the price to be honest.

Yes, measurements in PPP are going to be quite wild, that’s a result of a quickly-globalizing market in a wildly unequal world. Residents of Turkey also get to enjoy $250 monthly rent where that would be unheard of in the USA.

yeah if the sub goes up in the USA, I’ll unsub.

The sub price has remained the same for almost 20 years. If it goes up, it’s actually long past due.

But yeah, go ahead and quit a game you’ve played for decades because it increased a little bit. If you account for inflation alone, the game sub should cost something like $25 in todays world.

Nah, there is no reason to raise it. In fact, there is good reason to LOWER IT. All MMORPGS are hemorraghing subs. but please, go ahead and disparage me because I disagree with you; I expect nothing else from the wow community !

I understand Turkey… but Ukraine… really? My culture is being wiped out and y’all gotta raise prices on them to boot? I know there are economical reasons and all… but geeze… :frowning:

You should ask the EU to send WoW subscriptions in its next humanitarian aid package.

Well that was probably one of the most ridiculous comments I’ve read today.

We in Australia had an increase not that long ago to adjust to exchange rates, and since those have not significantly changed since then, I doubt very much that we will get another increase in the near future. IF those changes are based on exchange rates. However, if they simply increased the sub rate as a way of making extra money, well, that could happen in theory anytime.

Dunno how it is in the US, but our charges for things like services (electricity, water, gas, internet, mobile phone etc) go up all the time. That’s purely them working in relation to the local economic situation.

I had heard about this, hoping it doesn’t increase in Canada, We’re at $18.99 per month atm ($21.xx with tax), I thought about the 1yr or 6mo sub, but dont want to pay for it then risk going on a break.

how much stuff has become cheaper over the last 20 years?

we’re doing extremely well for the price to have remained unchanged for so long.

i wish my utilities, groceries, fuel, internet, medication, and all of my other day-to-day expenses hadn’t seen massive price-hikes over the past 20 years, but they have.

if you can’t afford a couple of extra bucks per month, you’ll still be able to pay with gold.

you should probably ask to speak to the manager.

Yeah as a Canadian with exchange rates + 13% tax it’s so expensive. Especially when our rent is $1600+ a month for a single bedroom apartment. I wish I was kidding, but after rent people barely afford food, so things like gaming subs are low on the totem pole

Your Canadian cost still works out too $15.74 US dollars…which is what Americans pay now…well you have to pay 74 more cents then US player does…but again some States in the US add taxes too those that pay for game services…not all states but there are some that do…my state its always been $14.99 a month if I pay by the month, my state doesn’t tax my online payments to Blizzard.

I pay $3400/month U.S. >_>

The sub price has stayed relatively constant in USD, most of these price increases are a result of the fluctuating value of the respective currencies compared to USD.

Long pass due??? WOW sells more than subscriptions.
When it comes to spending on video games China, Japan & the USA are the top 3 markets.
