I have only played solo so far. You can form the meta team by playing with pugs. Guildies are similar to pugs, you have to find the ones at your own level. The better ones dont want to play with you, n you dont want to play with the ones worse than you neither. Communication helps but it wont do anything if the players’ skills cant match the difficulty of the content they are in.
Or you can play like Bitzerthis, he makes friends while he plays and forms his own groups.
I prefer to being free without restriction to a certain group so I solo play 
Another suggestion, play meta classed if you want to be competitive in m+. Unlike raids, m+ is very unwelcoming to non meta classed. And DK is one of the worst (would say the worst) dps classes right now.
