There’s really three key issues:
- Class balance
- PvP reward structure
- Logistics - (Which maps are “rated” vs. “not rated,” tools to find teammates and form teams quickly, what role queues have to play, randomness of game-type, such as capture the flag vs. domination, etc.)
The first issue, class balance, is something I get is hard. All the different classes, all the different specs within the classes, it’s a lot to balance around. Sometimes Blizzard does better, sometimes they do worse, but it will always be an eternal issue, more akin to something like maintenance rather than fixing a broken thing.
But the second issue - the PvP reward structure - what the hell is their excuse for how bad THAT is?! Not only have they not advanced over the years, they’ve actually made it worse. It’s absolutely pathetic. I’d love to know what genius at Blizzard actually decided to orient PvP gearing around RNG.
The third issue - logistics - isn’t as pathetic necessarily as their handling of the reward structure issue. At the very least, there are SOME difficult questions they need to think through. At the same time, it really doesn’t seem like they’ve been trying or working through anything. In particular, the neglect of Rated Battlegrounds is kind of an astounding thing. I don’t know what the best path is, what tools would work the best, whether a queue system ought to exist in some capacity, or what, but the point is… Blizzard didn’t even make an effort at trying to explore options over the years.
