It's 2019 and STILL no openly gay NPCs

I have similar head canons about Velen and Kil’jaeden. Why else would someone be so obsessive as to chase someone through the entire universe for thousands and thousands of years?

That’s actually a pretty dope reading. Maybe on some level, that’s what KJ was trying to do - convert Velen, his love, to get him to join what he saw as the winning side.

Thank you! And yeah, that’s definitely how I’ve seen it. The Twisting Nether hath no fury like a Kil’jaeden scorned.

This thread should just become a “Which Warcraft character is secretly gay?”

The answer is all of them.

Honestly this is because they just dropped the ball on his character so hard after season 1.

He was shown to be a sort of a prodigy in season 1, being completely self taught, yet being one the best firebenders in history. And he’s also the first non-water bender to resist blood bending, ever.

But right after season 1, they just completely did away with his character. He did pretty much nothing for the next 3 seasons. He was always just sort of there.

Mako killing Ming-Hua in season 3 was awesome and brutal, but that’s pretty much all he did in those 3 seasons.

Whereas Bolin became a lava bender, joined Kuvira’s crew for a bit, become a mover star and helped out the Beifongs.

I definitely agree that Bolin needed more screen time after he basically did nothing in season 1, but they basically replaced Mako with Bolin entirely.

They can’t even make major characters organically straight.

Tyrande/Malfurion… Sylvannas/Nathanos… all abhorrently cringeworthy festivals of eye-rolling.

Blizzard needs to just stick to writing bad fantasy and leave bad romance to other, much more talented hacks.

To be absolutely fair, the best written gay characters are those you don’t know are gay until it’s revealed. I’m not saying YOU have made any assumptions, just clarifying that I’m speaking in general here, but the vibe I often get from a character being obviously gay is that it’s a joke. People are rarely defined by their sexuality. A well written character should be as realistically portrayed as a person in whatever elements we can relate to them in, which includes psychology, orientation, morals, etc…

None of those have anything to do with him being a ~character~. Fire-bending prodigy is not a character trait.

Agree to disagree but he is a trash character from inception - from his name, which was to elicit points for the real Mako - to the very end. Though his fight with Ming Hua was awesome.

I normally wouldn’t be so harsh in my criticism since at the end of the day, cartoons and comics are not known for their nuanced, compelling characterization (and geeks are none-the-wiser since they don’t actually consume good literature/movies) BUT the characterization in ATLA and even Korra are fantastic on the whole.

So Mako is a damn stinker.

Characters who -could- be believably gay that wouldn’t be obvious pandering:

Maiev
Baine
Vol’jinn
Thalyssra
Taelia
Flynn Fairwind

We know Jaina likes men, but I don’t think it would be unrealistically to find comfort with another female character given the correct development.

We assume Nathanos is in love in Sylvanas… But I could see him going the other way too. Both ways perhaps? At least, prior to his undeath.

I don’t think all these characters should be gay, but if a one or a couple of them were revealed to be, I wouldn’t have a problem with it.

The only one on that list I don’t care for is Nathanos, and only because the undead don’t feel positive emotions very often, for one thing, so romance is out the window, and for another, I don’t imagine they feel much… physical urges either.

Yeah, if such a thing were to be revealed, it would require a bit of tact that I don’t think Blizzard’s current writing staff could pull off. I think it could be done, but it wouldn’t be the conventional romance that we all are familiar with.

Romance in undeath would have to be mostly non-physical, and require a very specific type of chemistry. However, it is because of that I think Nathanos could romance another man… maybe more of a bromance, now that I think about it.

Edit: Warcraft doesn’t have much romance in it, does it? Like, all romance happens off-screen it seems.

Yes.

Definitely.

Absolutely!

Bisexuality is a thing, definitely not outside the realm of possibility.

Flynn and Shaw ship sailing?

can someone tell me the reason Jaina had to boink a dragon?

'cause thats a much bigger (heh) diversion from the norm than a same sex couple and I never figured out why it was a narrative choice that had to happen

As another Bacon Tomato I basically headcanon 90% of characters as bi unless otherwise told. But any official confirmation of anything would be preferred for rep obviously

I can only guess, but considering Kalecgos has some sway over Jaina and has talked her down from such thing as Flooding Orgrimmar, I imagine the reason was to have someone close to her who could help her cope with situations she might not otherwise be able to handle.

Or something.

Blizzard doesn’t really do romances very well.

great!

So all it would take to justify why a same sex relationship has to happen is that theres a character who might make a bad decision, or who might need help coping with something hard to handle, and just have the loved one that helps them through it be of the same gender!

Personally I nominate Thassarian and Koltira. Thassarians always helping Koltira through stuff.

To be fair, Jaina and Kalecgos’ relationship seemed pretty unhealthy from the start. The each reminded the other of someone they actually loved before. For Jaina, Kalecgos reminded her of Arthas. For Kalecgos, Jaina reminded him of Anveena. It’s… really not feasible to compete with a ghost.

I agree with you there!

But its still a relationship that apparently had a “reason” to exist between a human and a dragon.

If we hold these writing decisions to the same standard then it would be trivially easy to find an equally compelling “reason” why a relationship between two men or two women should happen.

Someone asking for a gay character isn’t an agenda.
