Once the practice becomes widely acceptable, it immediately spreads to non-competitive players who have real life obligations and limited time. They would normally accept not clearing as a natural result of their limited time, but if competitive players buy they follow along because they perceive the gold purchase as a “mount purchase” similar to the way someone would buy a store mount.
The motivation is different, and they only adopt if the competitive players adopt first. However, the result is the same. Widespread adoption is why the demand is so high right now.
I should note, this is a common dynamic in human behavior. Competitive players seek novel solutions. Non-competitive players watch the competitive ones test the approach. If the test is successful, they establish acceptance, praise the practice, and establish social normalcy. They then become this approach’s staunchest defenders.
Competitive players test new theories. Non-competitive ones defend already established theories and protect the agreed upon strategies.
