Is WoW still the #1 MMO?

What is this “OSRS” that people speak of?

not trying to body check you here, but Id like to see some verifiable numbers on this one.
having a real hard time believing it.

That’s like half of what WoW would have in an absolute worst-case scenario for WoW.

This game wouldn’t be profitable if it dropped below 2mil considering how many moving parts there are.

i think diablo 4 is the new best mmo

to be fair traditional mmos are dying. just because nobody have time for anything anymore so there is no attachement to anything, in fact if there would be a new wow, it would be a multiplayer with a big lobby and some story driven quests/scenarios and the main loop should be instanced pvp and dungeons.

kinda like warframe, or something similar. its way cheaper and faster to make content for a lobby based game that giant zones filled with quests.

Realistically, no other MMORPG is going to come close if you combine classic and retail subs.

If you don’t, you’re just going to be arguing if retail or classic is #1 or #2 at that point.

FF14 could have briefly been #1 during that 6 month hype phase before/during Endwalker, but it also fell back to its usual numbers. However, it’s nothing more than a guess since they have never given their sub information, so you have no real data to compare other stats to.

It actually did. I never said Lost Ark kept those players, but for a time it took them away.

Show me something beyond “trust me bro” and I’ll believe it.

One metric we could use is Twitch viewership.
LA launched in America on February 11th 2022.

https://twitchtracker.com/games/18122

If we look at WoW’s viewership for February 2022, there was no significant change beyond the usual minor fluctuations between every month. In fact it had a higher peak of 132k viewers opposed to January with 82k viewers.
The difference is 100 small channels.

twitch viewership is not something to ever follow up on as a source of anything. Most people play games instead of watch it.

If I ever win the lottery I’m going to make my own MMO.

SciFi theme like EVE & Anarchy Online, with the WoW play style.
No caps on anything. No level caps, no stat caps, build your character however you want till the end of time. Travel the universe and fly to other planets and start conquering it with a SimCity feel to it, building your own cities and trade districts. Infinite grinding, infinite gathering. That’s what MMOs should be about.

If it isn’t #1, it is a very close second to Final Fantasy XIV, which is honestly no shame at this point. It leaves the only other two relevant games in the genre (ESO and GW2) in the dust. Nothing else is even worth discussing outside those four. Any other game in the genre is holding on by a thread with a very niche but dedicated audience.

Exactly. How are you not grasping the point I am making?
Your claim is baseless but you swear by it. I am asking you to give me anything beyond “trust me” and you’re failing to deliver.

I used Twitch viewership because it is at least something we can measure. News flash, there are no official figures.

FF14 does well.
Thing is, WoW found a template they followed and it has worked while other MMO’s tried to skimp on the gameplay and focus on the monetization.

The category of MMO isn’t really lengthy that really do proper products.

trust me he is. he must have gotten bored with the wow classic forums and come over here.

We dont know wow’s sub numbers either but considering Df sold less copies then Sl, yeah its bad.

I mean we can make suggestions and help to make the game better. But who cares if we know what the numbers are or not?

Clearly they’re not going to give them to us.

And let’s face it we’re just gonna use those numbers to promote stagnation or radical change… Basically we’re just going to use it to reinforce our already bias opinion

The fact that we haven’t been told exact sub numbers doesn’t mean what they said about selling fewer copies is wrong. Whether you think it’s “bad” that they sold a lot fewer copies or not is an opinion. Perhaps you think it’s okay that they sold a lot fewer copies and the game is losing players as it always does throughout an expansion. But the fact that the population is down since Shadowlands is just a fact. They wouldn’t have put it in the investor’s report if it wasn’t true.

But to be fair didn’t s l break records? Or was that just preorders?

So they didn’t sell more than they have ever in the history of ever… I think the odds of that were pretty large. Even so the game could very much be in danger.

But it’s all wild speculation
