Is wow…sci-fy?

What if in Harry Potter a portal opened up and hulking green monsters came out from another planet mind you, who wanted to claim this world as their own. Would it be high fantasy or low fantasy?

Get with it folks.

It’s Fant-sci-fy

It’s pronounced exactly how it looks.

Personally? I’d still say it’s in the realm of Low Fantasy, since HP has always been more about Harry growing out of his fish out of water status, and as you as a reader learn more about the Wizarding World, it’s usually more about how the fantasy elements play into the ‘real world’ elements.

Like there are soooooo many parts in Harry Potter as a franchise where the big things feel bigger and more magical/out there because it’s about someone from a normal world uncovering fantastic elements about it, which is a key trait of low fantasy.

I mean, when you think about, a green hulking beast from another planet showing up has about the same impact as a troll showing up in the bathroom. It’s more how an author chooses to weave it into their greater narrative and mythos.

I am still going to go with low fantasy because it is a modern time. Now if Harry Potter went into the portal that would be high fantasy or maybe sci-fi.

:butterfly: is this a numetal band?

overall yes.

there is definitely plenty of low fantasy in WoW, but it does get overshadowed by the high

A lot of magic in WoW, but some say magic is just science that is so advanced it’s impossible to understand. Or was that “some technology is so advanced it’s indistinguishable from magic”? Something. WoW is a hybrid.

We have spaceships that shoot lasers.

Sci-fantasy
If that makes any sense.

WoW would be science-fantasy if anything.

Kinda like Star Wars in that regard with stuff like the heavy use of chosen ones, prophecy and general mysticism.

Sci-fi in general is a sliding scale, though very soft varieties get the “science fantasy” label because it’s essentially fantasy with a futuristic and tech-heavy coat of paint.

We got Space Goats.

It started as your typical fantasy trope, but once time and space travel was introduced in warlords/legion it went a bit further.

It’s both.

Humans living in castles, pretty generic fantasy.

But then you zoom out on their history, they arrived as constructs cursed with flesh, and found their humanity.

Zoom out further, they’re the distant creations of cosmos-spanning giants. Several races are.

Remember the Dark Portal as an intro?

Basically most stuff on Azeroth is fantasy, but everything outside it (Draenei) is decidedly sci-fi, like Outland.

And tbh, WoW was always steampunk-y to a degree, thanks to Goblins and Gnomes. You had zeppelins and flying machines even back in the RTS games.

Space travel happen in BC but I would argue gnomes with their mechs and Deeprun Tram are outside of your typical fantasy trope.

Basically anything that doesn’t or can’t exist in the the real world, a winged fire breathing 2 story tall dragon is fantasy… I’d use a unicorn but rhinos are related to horses and exist… so technically that’s more fantasy than the unicorn unless the weird horse with a single horn can like…puke rainbows or somethin…

so to cavemen WE would be living in a fantasy world? lol

cause their limited understanding of the world would make everything we know “unable to exist in” in their world.

I mean… the cell phone and smart watch you use was the basis of Startrek alongside teleporters and practical space travel… we have just about everything the original Startrek considered a science fiction. Imagine being Leonard Nimoy and living long enough to see things you thought were fiction become technological fact and in everyone’s pocket?

WoW is Fantasy, first and foremost. But it also utilizes Steampunk, which is a genre of Science Fiction.

fantasy and sci-fi are just literary terms we use to describe genres in literature but this can be applied to video games and movies too.

there can be a lot of cross over between what is fantasy and what is sci fi, but that doesnt mean we start listing every fantasy with technology in it as sci fi, or vice versa.

are people nowadays so uneducated as to not know these kinds of things anymore? society’s general intelligence has really devolved huh…
