I mean the only time I used TomTom is to place waypoints now waypoints are built in, so is it even needed?
I’m not sure if the pins can be linked outside of the game. I tried to do it on Beta but copying a pin didn’t actually copy any text.
So addons like TomTom might still be useful for sharing locations.
I imagine TomTom is just going to change to use and manage the new pin system and allow you to script to it.
I made another topic about this when I saw this tool, but at the moment I didn’t see coordinates. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to see someone commenting somewhere “thing is on X, Y on map Z” and place a marker in-game, but now the coordinates are there.
Sharing is apparently possible inside a group, so that’s also taken care of (although I didn’t test it).
What I would like the map pin tool to do now is let us set more than one pin, which TomTom did… and keep showing the “GTA arrow” when the pin is in a different zone.
I haven’t had a use for Tom since myspace
probably not, but i still like the crazy-taxi arrow that shows-up when i die.
What if you want to place 37 waypoints? The ingame system can only do 1 waypoint at a time so when you go to wowhead to find where some achievement objective is and it gives you one of those Paste addon blocks of coords
/way 1,1
/way 2,2
/way 3,3
/way 4,4
…
/way 73,73
for where all the chests are you need to open for whatever achievement you’ll need tomtom
Reasons why I will never use the pin system and will continue to use tomtom:
- Addon integration with e.g. handy notes, Silver Dragon, rare scanner, paste etc.
- Provides an indicator of the direction your way point is in even when you’re on the other side of the zone (map pin has a capped range of about a quarter of a zone).
- Can have multiple tomtom way points up at the same time and are saved indefinitely if you wish. Map pins are capped at one.
- Probably other stuff I’m forgetting.
All in all, whilst the effort is appreciated, this new map pin system is just objectively inferior to tomtom in too many ways to ignore.
Blizz needs to make map pins do all of the above and far more if they truly wish to even remotely come close to competing with tomtom.
I think this and not being able to use multiple pins are my worst concerns. I don’t know what happens if you use TomTom now (is it even updated yet?) Will it place a map pin AND a TomTom waypoint??
We definitely need this tool to be better! It’s a great addition, but needs to do some more stuff to fill the gap it’s attempting to fill.
This map pin and direction icon is, in my opinion, useless, when compared to TomTom. The icon swings off to the side so much that one can’t see it, and any pin that is placed on the map does nothing. I can not find a way to disable this “feature”, which appears to interfere with TomTom.
TomTom can be extensively modified, the arrow remains visible, and will point to a pin that you put on the map.
I think that Blizzard needs to allow users to at least disable or delete their new brain child.
The stock UI still doesn’t have built-in coordinates. I can get a set of coords off WoWHead and then type /way x y and then off I go!
You have to change the hotkey in tomtom’s settings. Can’t use any of the options with Ctrl. I used Alt+Shift, since Alt by itself is a map keybind for HandyNotes.
In my opinion, the map pin system implemented by Blizzard sucks. You can’t actually place the pin on many locations where you would like to do so. I suspect the Addon community will continue using TomTom and Handynotes for better pinning.
As far as I know Blizz still hasn’t added a way to see your exact coordinates without an add-on, so I think it’s still useful
There are some rare items that are in extremely precise, small areas that only TomTom can help you with really. Like the mini cat achievement in Nazjatar
I haven’t updated Tomtom in many expacs and it’s still working. useful or not, it’s a solid addon. It also has the little arrow up the entire time, not just within a specified distance, so if this is something important to you then tomtom is better than the pins. Aaaalso the handynotes integration is fairly nice.
I found the pins so annoying I immediately turned them off in the interface options.
The pin system is just a nice addition for dealing with all those people who don’t use addons and think they’re some sort of purest who is better at the game because of it. In just a quick few clicks, there’s a pin for them to head towards. Outside of that, it’s pretty pointless. I can still get a location from wowhead and /way 69, 69 to be where I wanna go with an arrow and an ETA from Tom Tom.
Though there is a fun thing you can do with the map pins and just link a spot in the Barrens and tell people to behold your field of ****s and see that it is [Map Pin Location].
i dislike the new pin thing myself, i mean, i dont care for it. However, it upsets me a great deal that i cannot CTRL-click the map to add a tomtom waypoint since its automatically uses the blizzard pin. did anyone find a way around this? I cant seem to turn the bliz pin system off, or change its key binding…
I like the new pins and have used them a bunch, feels better knowing everyone can make use of them.
I still use TomTom for things like HandyNotes.
