For the longest time I thought Shar Val from EverQuest was the WORST designed city, largely due to its size, crashing computers despite meting min requirements, corrupting Kernel files, and just generally not having an intuitive layout for any of the merchants and class trainers.
But every single time I go to Silvermoon it feels like I’m playing Marco Polo.
Although I believe EverQuest still remains tops for corrupting Kernel Files, my computer wasn’t affected to that degree, and I could still find a trainer at 5 FPS (until the patches that fixed both).
I don’t think they’re ever going to Patch Silvermoon to fix the layout of key NPCs.
The thing is from a Role Play Standpoint it almost makes sense that the Trolls would create a psychopathic labyrinth. So I’m on the fence, but it’s a good nomination.
I mean both of those don’t really seem confusing so much as they’re just circles. And yeah, that description of Oribos being an Airport fits. I like that. Big isn’t great but it’s not necessarily the worst.
Oribos was by far the worst-designed city in the game. Yes, it was a ‘circle’, but it was an extremely large circle that you could not fly in (and still can’t fly in), and every service was indoors and spread out way too far apart from each other.
On top of that, it was missing an AH unless you were an engineer (and still is), so if you wanted to do anything involving the AH, you had to go back to Stormwind/Orgrimmar or hope someone out in the larger circle was on a brutosaur.
I kept a stack of Goblin Gliders in my bag so I could make it to the docks easier. Who’s idea was it to put the main hub a mile away from the zone exit?
It took me a week to get my bearings in Silvermoon. But I can autopilot by reflex to anywhere I need to go now.
I’m still deeply annoyed that there’s a big area I have to carefully avoid clipping, but I’ve only actually been flagged once on one alt while absent-mindedly flying off in the wrong direction. Even my Horde characters avoid the old city just so I avoid developing any bad “oops, wrong shrine” habits.
That aside, overall I actually like the place quite a bit.
I like silvermoon. One of my favorite spots is a big landing on horde side that is looking out over the Isle of Quel’Danas. Many other nice little gardens around, too.
