Is Shadowlands the first expansion to be loudly hated before launch?

Blizzard will never release an expansion that will not get hate. Some get more than others, but this is pretty par for the course, especially on the forums

So much for shadowlands “player agency” and trying to make it friendly to new players.

Imagine a new player hit level cap in shadowlands and is met with multiple systems while learning how gearing and enchants work? GG.

We will see, if so, great. If we’re having to grind massive anima loads and L15 conduits then maybe not so much. Am prepared to wait but have little trust.

Yes you are right, that’s his job. His job is also to make a fun game that people would enjoy. Which he is failing.

I never said MOP didn’t contribute. Nor I said MOP was much beloved.

The subs did go up with advent of classic, but next quarter it will show that it shrank back given that the luster for classic is diminishing.

No, it’s more a hotdog and you only get a bite once per day.

The irony.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Blizzard double down on such universally disliked systems as the major feature of their upcoming expansion like this before.

We’ve had enough of this stuff the past few expansions to know we’ve disliked it. Other expansion features have been based on speculation because they weren’t known. We know how borrowed power works already. It sucks.

yup and it sucks

Example number 1001 of why analogies are terrible for convincing people of things.

It’s really more of a meme response. I’m not trying to convince anyone of anything with that reply - if someone doesn’t intuitively understand why changing something into something completely different means it isn’t the same thing anymore (the literal definition of words), there’s really no helping them. I can’t convince you the sky is blue my friend, you have to do at least some bit of the work yourself.

I would agree with you if you’ve said anything agreeable.

For one, if we’re going to start with analogies.

let’s start with AP as a hotdog.

What we have in SL is basically you have a hotdog(AP) and you can only take a bite once a week, but it is still a hotdog.

Shadowlands is like showing up to your motorcycle club and finding out they forgot to stock creamer in the break room, so you’ve got to go to the rodeo but all of the clowns are still getting dressed.

Shadowlands is like dating an ex that said she’s a different person now. LOL

I’ll let you work out the details for yourself, but I’ll help steer you in the right direction -

You’re comparing a hot-dog eating contest to getting 2000 calories a day with a well-balanced diet.

Nice, but you’ve really got to lean into the analogy if you want people to argue over its quality.

Shadowlands is like dating an ex who said she’s a different person now, but instead of making you that dish you love, she uses extra spices and then you find a nickel on the street.

That’s actually a good one. Would put more detail on mine but just too lazy

Take notes, that’s how you make a proper analogy.

See, this is how it’s done. Double down on the analogies!

Yea, no. This is typical ‘sky is falling’ chorusing from General Discussion. Every expansion had hate and every expansion was considered ‘Dead on Arrival’ because Millenials aren’t getting instant gratification.

Then wouldn’t Valor Points just be AP too, but gated? Renown more closely mirrors than VP than AP. Weekly cap of currency/resource filled to advance in the game. Dailies have been in the game for a very, very long time, just not in the open ended manner that Legion AP and BFA AP was.

I can only speak for myself:

  • BC & Wotlk - wildly excited!
  • Catalysum - meh
  • MoP - very excited
  • WoD - I was very disappointed, and I felt like we were being duped
  • Legion - super excited but hated how flying was handled
  • BfA - cringe worthy and didn’t want to buy it (husband gifted it)
  • Shadowlands - don’t like anything about it, I think its going to be terrible for the wow community, and for the first time in 14 years I will NOT buy an expansion.

I personally disagree. I’m very excited for Shadowlands, and I think it’s going to be better for new players and a large portion of the WoW community. I think at this point anyone who is saying they aren’t going to buy the expansion is just better off playing a different game, as I don’t think WoW is for them anymore. And that’s okay.

The direction of the game won’t change so it’s better to just find something you enjoy than be mad about a game you used to like that is nothing like it used to be.
