Paladins were massively reworked between the final beta push and the release of WoW and it didn’t go well.
My experience so far at lvl 39:
I am doing more DPS that most classes, even those higher level than me. However the OVERALL dmg isn’t there. Now this was before I picked up consecration, so I’ll update after a few runs. So basically you hit less often as a ret pally, but when you do hit it’s hard AF.

Go Holy and fight someone until they get so bored from your heals they’re too busy watching Netflix to PvP and then you hit them with a hammer till they fall over.
As soon as you get your Seal of Command (and a slow weapon) you’ll be cutting down mob faster than a Feral Cat of the same level.
7PPM is a lot!
They do decent dps “if they are properly geared”, and have utility “such as divine protection”.
Well, assuming you don’t frontload with spells and the Ret rolls the dice well.
