You’re good to go. Everything can work well. It’s when you reach the World Records/First keys like 20s and up is when you need certain specs for the utility and consistent good damage. Ret Pallies have insanely good bursts, but its like Unholy DKs, not consistent. Good for MDTs (Edit: Brainfarted lol. The Blizz M+ Event thingy where they do +18 keys as fast as they can. Forgot the name.), but not for the WF keys.
So yes, you’re viable and good to go.

They are not desirable at all. Personally I never invite them to my keys as almost every other class brings more to the table. Only Warlocks are worse right now.

Arenas: In 2’s one of the highest rated players in the world is Ret.
Mythic raiding: Top guilds in the world bring ret paladin for immunities.
M+: They aren’t as represented but they can still come within 90-95% of meta classes. (This is not important or relevant in low key dungeons, or even up to 18 keys as far as I’m concerned.)

This reminds me of that meme with the guy riding his bike and he uses a stick in his spokes. If you can really say they aren’t desirable and you never invite them you must not know how good they can be and you’re only shooting yourself in the foot.
They can be an OT if needed using a rotation of four different cooldowns
They can save a players life and use off heals to assist the healer
They can cleanse a multitude of things
AoE stun on demons/undead (powerful in Waycrest for sure)
Clear stacking debuffs, ignore mechanics, clear “plague” zones like in Underrot
Absorb/mana buffs, soak mechanics to relieve other players… all while doing viable damage in ST and AoE x)
I think people really underestimate a good ret pally because they don’t have the sight to see how we can help the battlefield. One quick example is when I BoP someone during the Trothak encounter in Freehold and the dps with my BoP will run out of his WW and stand there rather than continuing to dps. Another would be running away on the Rezan encounter. You’re basically increasing everyone’s dps by using a BoP and holding the boss still.
If your tanks know how to utilize your wing CD things work well for us pallies. If you get tanks who pull three mobs at a time yeah we won’t shine haha

They’re certainly viable for the content you listed. As far as melee DPS go, they’re solidly in the middle of the pack for raiding. They’re no Fury warrior or havoc DH, but they’re also not scraping the bottom like sub rogue.
Ret pallies were used in the world first race and in the keystone master time trails by method Na who qualified in second. I know those arnt really high but still.
Ret pallies are viable for any content you want to do.

I’ll line up and hate on something if the evidence is there that it’s actually really bad but in those case (as with most) the facts just arnt there.

Salana’s response is kinda tongue in cheek but they’re actually correct. If you stack even double ineffable truth with crit or void ritual you will have a good uptime on your wings (which is good news bears). I’ve simmed it vs twilight destruction for the same corruption amount and it’s better!
This alongside a variety of DoTs will put you in a comfortable position as a ret (expurgiation, Get’Ikku, briny barnacle or torment as trinket).
For super high keys if you’re wanting to go past +16 sure it can still work well but you’d be better off giving in and going for a class that gets easier invites.

I dont understand why so many people seem to think that if your class/spec is not listed in the top 5 then you cant do anything.
Your skill and experience, plus knowledge of mechanics will help you along the way .
Yes Ret is viable. Why wouldn’t it be?
It’s not FotM but it’s still a perfectly fine class.
We haven’t seen true non-viable specs since Vanilla/TBC.
Any class or spec is viable.
Some players may not be viable, in terms of their ability to understand and accept that.
