Is non-set BWL epics for "shaman" or "pally" gated?

I think back in the day items like:

[Legguards of the Fallen Crusader] (pally)
[Primalist’s Linked Legguards] (shaman)

Gated by faction? Some people are saying the above items are gated by faction despite being non-set items.

Has blizz confirmed? Items like the plate legs are still good for warriors despite the INT on them.

They are locked to faction, you won’t see the plate legs on horde, nor the mail legs on alliance.

Was changed in TBC to drop for both factions

I am a bit surprised to see they are gated. The tier pieces were not gated between the factions. Alliance could get Shaman tier and Horde could get Paladin tier drops

This is false, with the exception of the BoE items.

BoP paladin/shaman tier could not drop for the wrong faction until the 2.0 (BC) prepatch. Only the BoE items could (and should still be able to, in theory) drop for the wrong faction.

There was actually a short time when they could. And it pissed everyone off to no end.

This was the 2.0 prepatch, which did make it possible. There was a lot of complaining about it.

(Remember that Vanilla wasn’t like modern gaming, there were still plenty of people running MC on a regular basis in 1.12 and 2.0.)
