I have heard horror stories of people using Best Buy’s “Geek Squad”. Best to learn how to work on this stuff yourself. Also if you build a custom built computer you won’t run into stupid stuff like glued in CPU’s or having to take apart metal plates just to access ram, etc.
Also Desktops are alot easier to work on, cheaper, and generally perform better.
I’ve had nothing but problems from tech stores so I just fix things myself.

in the end you’ll want to work on your own computer/devices. especially if you visit sketchy meme sites. it doesn’t take too long for a nosy tech to clone your HD/storage.
I don’t think you have any right to call anyone a noob when you’re the one bringing in your computer to get serviced…
That’s like me calling my car mechanic a noob even though I barely know how to change a tire.

There’s a bare minimum of knowledge and experience required to work as a car mechanic. Many are bad anyway, but it’s not unusual for them to be better equipped than you to work on your car.
In the case of Best Buy tech guys, there is no bar. They have no qualms hiring unqualified people because anybody who knows what they’re doing can likely work elsewhere for better pay. There’s a very good chance you’re more capable than in-store tech guys.
I worked at an electronics shop right around the time that cell phones were becoming a “must have” instead of just a cool bonus thing, and I can tell you without a doubt that yeah, no one at a “computer shop” will know how to fix your computer nowadays.
Why? because anyone who is actually qualified to do that is making their money somewhere as an IT specialist or a server admin or whatever, while the electronic shops are hiring minimum-wage drudges who know how to smile and, if possible, deflect actual questions with shiny buzztalk. They are not there to provide a service, they are there to acquire your money. The place I was at actually stopped selling parts and moved right into cookie-cutter PCs while I was there, and was moving in on the “pester every single human being about getting a cellular contract” scheme which is standard nowadays.
As some have suggested already, build your rig through a site like PC partpicker, which is what I did last year. You can set up notifications for when your preferred gear comes on sale, make budget charts which will direct you to similar-yet-cheaper components, and gasp even get advice from people who GASP know what they’re doing.
To quote Electric Six, “I get my advice from Gas Boy / I get all my gas from Advice Boy”. The places we used to go for expertise and professional opinion are being steadily eaten by the wealth-extraction racket, and just aren’t the same place anymore. You’d be just as well off asking the person next to you in the washroom stalls.

I mean… one of the things he asked them do was switch out a stick of RAM

Why your going out to a computer store to get computer parts? Why not use a website like Newegg or Amazon to get them delivered to your door and possibly cheaper?
Yep, it’s all based around commissions now. Employees are incentivized to sell you as many high ticket items as possible, because that’s how they make their living.
Only exception is the Apple store and (I think) Microsoft store. They’re not commission-based and in fact employees that pester customers too much can get dinged for it, and at least for Apple stores workers can eventually work their way up to corporate if they want to.
If it was a laptop some of them can require pulling apart delicate parts to replace it. Generally though yea changing ram out is pretty easy.
You make an excellent point here.
Why are you taking your system to a computer store to do things that you could do yourself easily? You’re calling them noobs?
Do it yourself. It’s easy and fun.
Good point lol
Thanks everyone for your replies!!!

You have a local Computer Store? Are you a time traveler??
True pc gamer would buy parts and assemble them himself.
Not everyone is confident about pulling things out of their computer. No one’s paying the OP for computer work, but those guys who worked on his should be able to perform such minor tasks.

And here I thought that’s what roommate’s who build racks for a living are for.
Can you not do this stuff yourself? I think you’re the bigger noob here.
I would never trust someone else to work on my computer. I will always do the work myself.
All it took was that one time I bought a laptop, and the geek squad people sold me on a “cleaning” to remove all that bloatware new comps come with. Well whoever did it decided to impatiently shake the laptop out of its retail box, crashing it down on the edge and breaking the disc drive/putting a huge crater in the side.
Always work on your own PC.
