I’m going to make a couple of assumptions here. It says you’re level 62 so im guessing you mean low level dungeons? And by less than the tank you mean on trash pulls?
If this is the case then there really isn’t much you can do for big trash pulls. You have no aoe, dotting mobs across the board takes a lot of mana and they normally die too quickly for you even to get any dps on them.
If you’re talking about low level dungeons I wouldn’t worry about it yet. Focus on the healthiest target and just do a standard single target rotation. You won’t be beating a tank like a pally on big pulls.
What others have said. I wouldn’t even bother worrying about your damage done on encounters outside bossfights, and even for bossfights, expect to do mediocre damage at best. Your job is basically to make other casters do more damage for longer.
Once you hit 70 and start doing raid content, you can start to compare yourself against similarly geared spriests via world of logs if you really care.
Sadly scaling is pretty bad as shadow. You only get 50% increased crit damage and only mind blast and shadow word death can crit. Not to mention those same spells have pretty bad spell power coefficients so they rely heavily on the base damage they deal. Haste doesn’t increase number of DoT ticks until wrath and only decreases the gcd when you cast the DoT.
Minimize down time by advising not to cast vampiric touch?
Pain is too expensive and lasts longer than the mobs are alive.
I think we have a conflict of interest.
Spriest DPS from the original tbc wasn’t great either. We were primarily mana batteries.
Spriest can be excellent DPS if geared correctly, snapshotting dots correctly in the right comp. It really is gear dependant though.
The skill cap is rather high for Shadow.
Research, research, research and practice on a target dummy.
The game is “more balanced” around max level. This is always true. Don’t base pre-max level numbers on max level numbers.
a geared tank can out dps most classes if they are undergeared. especially classes like yours who have no aoe spells other than multi-dotting. shadow priests CAN do decent damage once they have good gear, but they are mostly there for the mana regen, buffs for warlocks, and health regen they bring to raids. if your goal is to be on top of damage meters, shadow priest is the wrong class to do it. I’d suggest warlock or hunter if that is your goal.
Run your own logs if people arent, you arent parsing against the hunters in your run, you are parsing against all the spriests on your server.
As long as your dps is above average for your class, you are doing fine, but its like classic, I can get high parses on this char, but a 90% from a warlock was still alot less DPS on a fight than an 80% warrior.
No you should be above the tanks. You should be sitting around 800+ dps
Of course it will. Gear makes a huge difference for anyone.
That seems kinda poopy to me.
OP is level 62. Not the slightest chance a spriest is going to do 800dps at level 62 unless they are a world class player in full naxx gear, and probably not even then.
Try 400 dps at 62.

Effective DPS (meaning when in combat, not active only) and overall numbers? 700 is fine. I haven’t seen anyone over 1000 in my groups. Sure I kill a boss with 1900 DPS but that’s not my overall effective DPS. Sometimes I’m pulling something into a trap etc.
Multi dotting in a spell cleave while leveling in AQ/Naxx gear was insane DPS.
Had many times in mana tombs where I broke 2k
I’m sure it was. OP is not in naxx gear and is new to spriest though.

True, undergeared and new to the class single target is quite reasonable at 400ish.

are you talking about dungeons? then don’t worry about it as much. don’t put VT/embrace on every trash mob, just put it on the main one, shadow word pain everything and spam mindflay and mindblast on cd. It’s been a while but I remember people complimenting on my dps when i did that lol
I raided tk,ssc, hyjal, and bt in the original bc and though my dps wasnt at the top it was somewhere in the middle but it was never the top tier of dmg. I was the only spriest in our raids and primarily for mana recharge. They may have changed it since there are so many changes in TBCC so it might be better now.
Until you hit 2-3 targets, then you become a monster.
You need to learn quickly how long mobs/packs last and adjust your strategy accordingly.
-Mobs dying too fast? accept your poor damage and do what you can, focussing more on mindflay and mindblast.
-Ignore the skull target and start dotting up EVERYTHING that is elite, don’t fuss with non-elite mobs they’re going to melt, once again only on packs that are not going to last.
-If stuff is going to live abit (heroic mobs, large elites, bosses) then do your full rotation.
-Always try to snipe kills with shadow word death.
Don’t compare to other dps. Only compare to other spriests if you have logs.
Multidotting 3-5 packs is really the only way to get to the top
