the color for the judgement is wrong. also the old judgement boots are way better. the colors seem like for most classes they went with a more dull version rather than the bright it use to be.
if you remember they removed the shoulder effect on the mage shoulders back in vanilla and the outcry from that got it changed back the next week if i remember right. i 100% believe there afraid of making it look to cool cause its free and not something that cost money.
For me it’s the bulky bits on the hips. I think they look stupid because having extra armor on the hips and nowhere else is a baffling choice from a protection perspective, and they also all cause clipping issues.
Honestly.
You wouldn’t exist if the original devs/art team/style didn’t change drastically over the last few years. DeviantArt and the rise of furries changed the wow art style forever. The original art team and devs would have lol’d themselves onto the floor of the desk crawl parades if someone showed them a Vulpera concept.
they absolutely ruined the paladin one. muted the colors, changed the eye shape for some inexplicable reason and yeah it’s still a cone dress…
on the other hand they did a FANTASTIC job with the Monk and Warrior ones. Like holy cow those are the best 2 with the Druid in close 3rd.
I like the pally and dk ones as a set. The monk one is ok. I think there are pieces from it that could be used to put together a banging custom monk mog . The rest are meh though there are probably some pieces of the others that could be used in custom sets.
Most of the new ones look better, although I like the subtler look of some of the old ones also (e.g. bloodfang, judgement).
A nice thing about many of the classic items is that they have good artwork without all the flashy particle effects or over the top designs. Especially the weapons, some of which are still among the best looking weapons they’ve ever made like Ashkandi, Crul’shorukh, doom’s edge, etc.
Absolutely. The additional… uh, toe protection(?) they put on some of the boots lately makes them look like clown shoes. They make the feet look extremely long, which in turn makes them look weird. They’re definitely not boots I would use without the leggings mostly covering them up. And in fact, this time I’m not using them. I’m currently using the old Judgement boots, but I might switch to another set of boots with a crisper texture, just not the clown shoes.
The colors definitely could have been more accurate, but it doesn’t bother me all that much, thankfully. The eye shape isn’t a huge change, but I can see liking the quadrilateral shape more than the almond sliver shape. I wish they had kept the glowing white color instead of going with blue, though.
And definitely agreed on still using the “cone” model for the Judgement legplates. I would have loved an actual new 3D model that accurately portrayed what the original concept art (and other 3D models of Judgement we’ve seen over the years) portrayed. I mean, I’m okay with it as it is if it means the difference between getting the set or not getting it, but we can still wish for better, right?
Edit: Now that I look at the boots side by side in the wowhead dressing room, these ones aren’t quite as bad as other boots. They’re a bit bulky, but maybe not as long as I had initially thought.
It’s because it’s an HD remaster of the originals, probably doesn’t evoke the feeling of seeing an ‘original’ set.
This isn’t even the first time they’ve done this- Tier 6 from TBC got remastered in Legion in Tomb of Sargeras- Tier 20.
I loved those sets so much, T6, still among my favorites.
And I think the T2 remaster looks better than the originals, especially the rogue one.
Hunter T2 is still trash, because the original Hunter T2 was trash, but the rest are pretty good. Even the Priest/Mage ones.
You can clearly see the rogue boots are some kind of ninja tabi-type boots. With the old tier, you couldn’t see that lol- it just wasn’t nearly as defined/detailed. They’ve got straps on the boots, that you can see.
TLDR - It’s not just painted-on, like old armor tends to be. There’s 3D parts of it that pop out.
i like them all, except the Evoker, and DH ones. To each their own.
The classic old art style is still very cool and i enjoy it. But the new ones and their more modern takes are very cool.
Like the old rogue set is just a classic look. simple yet effective. i think they tried to capture it but it looks too bulky. Still cool. but i prefer the older one in this regard.
The priest one is by far my absolute favorite. super neat. Maybe a bit bulky in some parts. but fantastic overall.
I wish they’d knock this off. We finally go the EMERALD Dream and it’s just this washed out green. Idk why they’re going with this color choice, my guess is someone on the art team saw the meme about how colors fade when you get older and thought it’d be funny to do that with WoW.
To quickly comment, the four new sets are… well, there’s two exceptionally good sets (Monk, DK) and two extremely bland ones (DH and Evoker).
As for the actual remasters:
Druid is… I think it the new textures and geometry make it unnecessarily rough. The shoulders in particular are not so great, and I think the original set is better there. The original was a classic look for a reason.
Hunter… there was no ever fixing that set. Same atrocious colour scheme as always.
Mage is a good remaster of the original, I feel. But at the same time, I can see why some would prefer the older set.
Paladin is contested a lot of the time, and I think the original helm does look better. Also noticed a lack of detail on the chest piece, there should be two more ribbons below the chest emblem.
Priest is another good remaster like the mage set, same caveats.
Rogue is nearly indistinguishable from the original. Seriously, I had to look again to notice the extra geometry, and that’s about the only difference.
Shaman… if you didn’t like the original, there was no attempt to rework that. I like the new version, but it’s mostly just an HD update with extra geometry… and extra sparkiness. I could see the gloves showing up in transmog sets just for the sparks.
Warlock is a great update to a classic set. It is mostly an HD remaster over the original, but done well and welcome.
Warrior is a good set, mostly just a straight-up improvement on the original if a bit more obviously purple rather than the dark blue-purple of before. That being said, matches the “Wardenguard” plate sets from BfA (Darkshore Warfront, Alliance) extremely well.
