Disagree, language is fluid. The logical opinion is that the most widely used pronunciation is correct. And gif is more popular than jif.
Go back to my op. How āwe naturally say itā depends on where you are from.
America is not the world, and Americans are really, really blind when it comes to this.
No.
But G has two sounds between it, and no consistent rule as to when it is soft and when it is hard.
(and in before the sex jokes)
As someone who was cursed with a nonstandard spelling of my dead name, these nonstandard spellings should be a crime.
Yeah and Iām sure outside the English speaking world they have a different opinion. However in English g goes g. The main reason our brain goes there is because when we pronounce words we base that pronunciation on similar words. The closest and most commonly used word to gif is gift, so people naturally say it like that.
I agree, Americans are.
People saying āI voluntarily choose to say it how the creator intendedā is not a rule like you are proposing.
You are claiming with a hard C that there is a grammatical rile when it comes to pronouncing initialisms, and Iām asking for proof.
I am not, I am saying that we naturally pronounce words according to how we speak the language as a whole. We say gif as gif because it is more natural as English speakers. The fact to type this pronunciation Iām spelling it normally shows this.
That pronunciation is the more widespread of the two, both are acceptable grammatically but gif is a more natural pronunciation.
Donāt introduce this guy to Australia, Canada or Scotlandā¦
āIn englishā is not universal. American english is not British english is not Australian english.
Us Canadians put that fancy U in everything, and have a closer tie to the French language because Quebec and Metis. What is natural pronunciation is not universal, it is regional.
Also, you wanna talk universal pronunciation? Boston.
Itās PNG, problem solved.
Hey m8, not American. Not quite sure why you keep banging this drum.
In this case, yes, it is. In every dialect of English hard gs are dominant. In every dialect of English gift is said the same way. Gift is the basis of why all English speakers naturally say gif as gif.
The guy that invented GIF pronounces it ājifā.
Good enough for me
I like Jif, but Iāll take Skippy if itās on sale.
This is the worst thing thatās been said in this thread so far.
I am a monster after all. Itās right there in my name.
It is neither of thoseā¦
It is Kif
ā¦ or was it Pif
ā¦no wait! it was Wif
Itās actually pronounced āhifā, as the g sound is actually a soft h.
You sure itās not Rif
ā¦ Takes out the anti-vulpera spray and the wolfās bane
Itās GIF. Jif is peanut butter.
My Aunt Francine tried to clean her caravan with peanut butter once, you should have seen the size of the roaches.
Hard g, I donāt care what the creator says because it doesnāt make sense.
Not that it matters, all browsers support animated PNG now which way better.
