Is It A Game, or Do You Feel Like It’s More?

I classify my investment in MMOs to be closer to a hobby than just playing a game.

I would agree with this assessment. I feel like it’s more of a hobby and less of a video game. I pick it up and put it down at Will and I’ve spent a lot of money on it.

Can totally see that. Makes tons of sense. you put in the time. build your (whatever) the machine. any other gear.

cost me a few hundred back in 21 when I said.

“I’m going to play wow again. You’ll be sorry. I know. I’m doing it anyway.”

I wish lol unfortunately this game and I have a 20 year torrid affair where I have purchased an actual truckload of tokens, services, cash shop items, epic, edition, expansions, one year subscriptions, and pretty much everything else you could spend cash on in this game. The last time I looked, I have a little more than 86 pages of transactions that total up just north of $38,000 since 2006. Sure a boat would’ve cost me more but then I would never get the thrill of playing a video game.

It should be a game, but the way it is played is more like an unpaid job.

It’s a game but… I love how it opens up a multi-dimensional pixel world layer of myself. I grow plants/nature, I am a druid. I hunt critters, I am a huntard. I have some loose religious beliefs - I empathize with priests & paladins, I am connected with spirit, I have some idea of monk & shaman. I get the beauty of death and death suspended - forsaken and dk. I mean, I can extend myself, as we all can to connect to a race and class. Minds are amazing things.

I mean, I am working on achievements because I find value in exploring areas of the game that I’ve previously neglected. I just feel like… if I’ve played the same game for 15 years, I want something to show for it. I’m a sucker for checking items off of a checklist and I don’t mind the grind. I place some value in it because it’s a lot of work. My dad (rip) introduced me to WoW so yeah, I’m a little attached because of all of the memories we shared together. I have a 10 y/o bag that he made me, just sitting in my bank because he made it. But at the same time, I can go weeks or months without playing OR play every day for weeks on end. Just depends on how I feel.

dang!

That’s a hobby for sure.

I don’t like to know those factoids about myself lol. What are you going to do, though. We’ve all grown with the industry and for many it’s a fascinating pride in how far it’s all come.

Then you take WoW. 20 years. Unheard of. This ain’t a normal anything. It’s its own thing.

I bet you have some neat stuff!

I think the initial freak out would be terrible. But most people would find comfort in another game like addicts do another drug.

I think most top dog blizzard employees would probably need some sort of security for awhile

I try to enjoy pvp but theres just too many areas of it that feel overwhelming, tedious or neglected, i occasionally log in and chat but outside of that i just focus on other pvp games, sometimes ill return and play consistently for a few months and quit then repeat the cycle
