Retail is surviving because of the sweaty nerds and the extreme casual players.
They have lost everything in between.
The only people who play retail are pet/mount collectors (the most casual casuals) and the extremely sweaty nerds who do mythic and hard content and gatekeep like crazy.
They have lost over 90% of the audience of Vanilla by bad game design.
They reward sweaty players and the most extreme casuals while pushing away normal players who want an open world without chores and super hard content.
The reason vanilla was so successful is because there were NO CHORES and you could do anything you wanted at anytime and didn’t feel like you were missing out or behind people because there were no dailies, no weeklies, etc.
Also it was easy. So anyone could raid the best raids and get the best gear even if they were bad. They could easily be carried by decent or good players and it was a much better social experience because of this.
There was almost no gatekeeping. Bad players were welcomed into all raids because they were easy. This let you bring all of your friends even if they were new to the game.
This is why the game exploded in popularity. You didn’t need a degree in WOW to play it. You could pick it up and play whenever you wanted and do fine.
You could also stop playing, come back, and still do fine. Your gear wouldn’t be completely useless.
An MMO is about the SOCIAL EXPERIENCE not hard content.
NO ONE CARES ABOUT HARD CONTENT.

Nah is the story which is the reason i dont play retail the story is becoming ridiculous. My friend all left after woltk as is like the end of story for them. Lfr definately kept many interest or those who have no time.
Vanilla is pure new thing for an mmo especially since warcraft 3 is a hit and then story continue in WoW. The game play tbh is soso at that time only 5% or less people raid. Which is why lfr was made. Imagine design a raid with only such a small fraction of people doing it.
I know is not hard in vanilla but forming a group or even dramas is enough to put many people off. Lfr totally eliminate such issue.
No one cares why YOU don’t play retail.
We are talking about why people who don’t normally play WOW, don’t play WOW.
IF you already play WOW you are not who I’m talking about.
You already know how it works and are tolerant of it’s shortcomings.
New players are not.
No new people are going to play a game that is super complicated and takes years to figure out.
They will go to an actual good PVP game like Leauge, OW, CSGO, ETC.
Only the sweaty PVE nerds will stick around for retail WOW or the extreme casuals who never figure out 20% of the game. They just run around mount collecting and collecting useless garbage.
And no new player is going to play Retail WOW for PVP. It’s complete garbage and too complicated.
90% of this player base can’t handle harder content than target dummy bosses, they are at the same skill level vanilla raiders were at.
