How could you possibly guess that? It comes “free” with retail there’s no way you can guess an accurate amount.
I just came back to WoW (both retail and classic, took a year break) and I can tell you retail is significantly more alive than Classic. Especially right now with everyone preparing for SL. Tons of people leveling/gearing alts atm. Most people still playing Classic (at least that I know) log in just once a week to raid at this point.
The RP servers are kind of a refuge from this.
Found this leaked video of classic devs addressing this question
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anbLVPoOYV4
you could do this, but it only works if people are paying attention.
i found more success doing it the old fashioned vanilla way.
type \who and whisper.
LFG spam tends to get lost on high pop servers, but people get a notification on whispers.
in addition to the altoholics that populate BB there is also the Hardcore community which is always leveling characters.
yes
go away
I would not say it is dead.
But certainly deaf most of the time.
This is a great way to get a lot of people to ignore you fast too.
No way at all? Hmmm.
Correct take here. A consequence of instances.
It’s not an MMORPG if it has instanced content period.
Yes. Now leave.
No Blizz did screw up and nuke a few servers with the free Xfers so a few realms feel dead or are 90+% one faction.
What does that even mean? Personally, I don’t mind quiet General, Say and Yell Chats. It’s rather annoying having nonsense spammed in those Chats, personally. Just because Chats aren’t being spammed with nonsense doesn’t mean the Game is “dead”.
I’m starting to see through the facade of this statement.
See, I’ve taken the initiative to actually “interview” (kind of) other players, in their methods in “hunting for groups”. That’s the problem, right there. Instead of taking charge and being THE party, you (not you specifically, just a general “you”) cower in the shadows and wait for somebody else to be “LFM”.
I’ll tell you the reason why IK this is because I had hosted a group for SM Cath and had gathered some folks. One of the DPSers (in that run), a day or two later, was advertising “LFG” instead of “LFM”, in the Public Chats. And, I told them, I wouldn’t “LFG” rather “LFM”. Want to know what they said, to that? “All good, man. I’m just going to cook some food and watch some YT Videos, on the side”. It’s no wonder people like that can’t get groups for dungeons. They’re not even trying.
Unlike myself, not only am I covering Trade Chats and LFG Chats but Zone Chats, as well. Because, those who are actually leveling, are NOT sitting in Major Cities! They’re out in the world, Questing! On top of that, are not even in the LFG Channel (which is a world wide Channel), to begin with.
The only time I see this out in the World is Desolace, for Mara. I hardly see these in Westfall (Deadmines), Ashenvale (BFD) nor Tirisfal/SM (SM). This is for Alliance side, BTW.
Heck, twice, I’ve offered (no charge) to run some bored lowbies through WC.
That’s tough to get to/plow through, as Alliance. Despite Alliance having Quests for there, too. Just got to go to the Barrens to pick them up. Both times, my Group filled and even overfilled of desperate lowbies wanting in, on the action.
That’s really up to the eye of the beholder. I still think so, personally.
Agreed. Which is why I prefer advertising in the Zones instead of doing that. I have Whispered folks but usually in a sincere way like a “sorry to bother you”. Still, avoid invading the Whispers and stick with advertising in Zones.
Bloodsail Buccaneers. I’ve noticed today there’s a lot more levelers about. Despite it being Wednesday and not the weekend.
I’m on BB, too. There are a ton of Levelers, but they’re out in the world which is why I go out there. I never fail to get a 5m, together, despite being PST, and the Server being EST. I still manage to get folks to run dungeons at Midnight PST despite it being 3am EST.
Is classic worth playing now?
Depends on what would make it worth playing for you.
If you expect to quickly get to end-game and gear up in BiS and raid, you’d need existing friends around, because you haven’t built the connections. If you enjoy the leveling process, the lack of players around might not be so bad.
Depends on what realm you’re on.
Every realm has its own environment.
I play a lot on Atiesh Alliance, and I don’t think I’ve ever been in any zone, any remote area of a zone, without crossing paths with other players.
My original 60 and 50s are on Mankrik Horde, and it’s still buzzing and active, groups forming (even for non-boost RFC).
Even on lower population realms, there tends to be chatter, activity. About the only place I play that can feel mostly dead is the RP realm as horde (Bloodsail Buccaneers). Orgrimmar has maybe 50 people in it instead of 500, spread out so there’s only maybe a dozen on the bank or by the AH.
The most I see is people selling runs for gold
Personally, I quickly right-click and ignore anyone asking for or offering boosts. At around 20-25 total ignored, I see multiple people looking for other players to join groups. Not just end-game, either. Deadmines, SM GY or Lib or BFD, Uldaman. Plenty of end-game, too, don’t get me wrong, but the crowd is diverse and I see a lot of people alt-hop if a dungeon they want is being run.

Yep! Never fail to advertise in starting zones, either! Never know who’s on an Alt, ATM and will quickly switch over to get the dungeon done. Hell, it’s happened to me, when I’m on my Alt, in a Major City working on a Profession or something, and I see an advertisement for something I can go to, on a different character. Never underestimate the power of an Alt ![]()
and I can tell you
My Classic server and retail server would like to have a word with you. Stop speaking for the many when you only play on a few.

Sorry to hear that. Alliance side is alive and booming. Come on over.
I don’t understand why do people conflate raid logging and game being dead. What’s wrong with raidlogging? I play Classic to have fun with the friends I made in my guild. We have a strong 40 man roster every week. Guildies aren’t quiting. How is the game dying? I don’t log in much outside of raiding because I don’t need anything from dungeons, and I don’t need more alts, I am happy with those I leveled to 60 already. But I am not even close to unsubbing from the game. I started playing Classic because I wanted to raid Naxx. I am raiding AQ40 now and getting closer to my goal. I never cared about leveling, I never cared about wpvp. Many people are like me, and enjoying Classic for their raid night.
Alliance side is alive and booming. Come on over.
I have Alliance also. It’s what makes the difference so stark. (There are people, just comparatively a lot fewer.)
I don’t understand why do people conflate raid logging and game being dead.
It’s a nonsensical idea that if other players don’t exist for them, the game is dead. Oh, no one will do this low level dungeon with me? Game is dead. Oh, no one is around to help with this group quest in Burning Steppes? Game is dead.
Someone in another thread had made the claim 90% raid-log, and I found that absurd. I actually run a census addon, and at prime time when raiders are getting their buffs it can get up to 3k on one realm, but same realm in the wee hours can still have 500 people on.
