I think that the game’s design philosophy post-WoD is going to make every single expansion exponentially worse than the one that came before it.
Sharding, WQ’s, Timegating every piece of content put into the game, M+ seasons and hit/miss affixes, “Power” grinds, all of this has been established over the past 3+ years as core mechanics of the game.
I believe WoW will never be truly good ever again with these gameplay mechanics, and will constantly struggle with a surge in subscriptions for 2-3 weeks post-patch, and a subsequent mass exodus.
As has been the case since 2004 though - WoW has the absolute best end game PVE on the market, with not a single competitor even remotely close.
I’d say no because at least BFA has actual raid content being released, but otherwise… for the average player (read:non raider or maybe LFR hero) probably? WOD didn’t have:
- perma-grind mechanics
- insane forging potential
- lack of cohesive story
In that regard, I’d say WOD is better.
Class design in BFA is what’s really holding it back. It’s not fun to play!
WoD had crappy story and was basically left to die by the devs, even then I had lots of fun there(Seriously, the raid encounters were nuts), made a heck ton of gold which bought 4 of my friends and I Overwatch, all SC2 expansions, Legion and other stuff thanks to tokens.
In BfA I struggle to find a reason to log in, at all. Of course fun is subjective, so all this is just my opinion.
