…so is there just no recourse here? I’m chasing an update or some acknowledgement of the fault on Sophos’ end. I am finding navigating Sophos’ community forums quite difficult.
Even a ‘we’re working on it’ would put my mind at ease.

Yep,
Why I have moved on for now.
I just want to clear up a line of thinking here:
If Blizzard “patches the patch” then Bnet/games will be seen as yet another new app (like it is now) on the computer, and would still require your antivirus app to update for it. In other words, it would perpetuate the problem.
They didn’t “make it trigger” the antivirus by including something suspicious; the client has a lot of new data (patch), so your antivirus app doesn’t recognize it yet.
The alternative would be that Blizzard never updates their games, and we’re stuck with old content and bugs for eternity. No thanks.
I get that completely. I realise this is an antivirus issue, not a Blizzard issue.
So you are saying the anti virus industry must all put their resources into making sure WoW will operate within their security conscious environment. Meaning one company ( a game at that) dictates the terms of how the security environment must work… gotcha.
No, the alternative does NOT mean Blizz will never update their games, it means they will have to do so responsibly. Everyone wants to pass the buck.
And, no amount of “it isn’t Blizz’s fault” will compensate for their total silence on the issue. Communication is Key and would alleviate the vast majority of concern.
Yes, it is their job to update definitions for the current versions of software. When their software blocks something, they receive data from your computer about it so they can make changes. WoW is the only game you play having an issue, but it’s not the only app to run into an issue with the many antivirus apps.
What isn’t responsible about this situation? They added new data to the game, the antivirus app sees it as a new executable, so it blocks it. That is how major software updates work.
Considering the forum is for players to help each other, not sure what you’re expecting in this thread. The solution was found.
Why are you protecting developers? Because the game sucks. We don’t play for free.
The only flaw in this logic is that I’ve been playing and updating WoW with Sophos for a long, long time. This is the first time I had issues after patch day. My guess is that the issue is related to something that Blizzard did in this last patch. It’s not like they can’t update, but they probably missed or added a step in that patch.
I haven’t been able to launch the game since February 29th. I’ve opened a ticket and got a worthless response. This needs to be fixed!! So frustrated
Edit: After trolling the EU forums, it looks like this is a Sophos issue they are having with HitmanPro Service. (I play on work computer and I can’t control the antivirus.) There is apparently a fix but it hasn’t been rolled out yet.
Make sure your security software is up to date . Old definitions can block wow.
Even linked earlier in this thread.
We know, but those instructions are pointless for the majority of the people in this thread since you need to be a Sophos admin in your organization.
I’m having the same issue. Unable to update Sophos as I’m not the admin; fat chance I’m asking haha. The sheer fact it was working just fine, now isn’t implies Blizz screwed the pooch here. Blizz plz fix your game!
Its actually common for security software that is not up to date to give false positives. The file size changing on a non updated machine can trigger the computer to block it.
I was having the same issue. This is what worked for me. I have an ASUS mobo and apparently, I installed the ASUS Armory Crate at some point. Seen it in my Task Manager and when I closed it, WoW fired right up.
Elocin… What isn’t responsible???
How about Blizz complete lack of communication, both here on the forums, on tickets in the queue and wherever else they could possibly let us know they are aware and there is or is not anything they can do. OR for us to pressure our anti-virus vendors for a fix.
Communication is key… do the no longer have a community liaison? They cut that job as well?
How are those actions in any way responsible???
Your blind defense is not in any way helpful
my game wont launch today either. just says “logging in” but never completes
finally got in
The reality is the game worked, they changed something, now it doesn’t work. I’ve had MULTIPLE patches go through no issue including all of SOD phase 2. The file has changed sizes plenty of times without an issue before. Blizzard broke something, period plain and simple. Stop being such a fanboy.
The tech support forum has always been a mostly player-help-player area—that’s why it’s not the ideal spot for feedback. It’s the same across all of their game titles. They still have technical support reps answering tickets.
