And as I mentioned above, that’s not all he says. He also says they’ll start increasing the number of players on a layer “as people spread out”. End result is a single layer, but a larger population cap than vanilla release.
Settle down, Slayer.
Lol, compelling point.
The fact is, they’re going to be using queues to place limits on server populations and layer counts. That addresses everyone’s doom and gloom predictions of Herod going into Phase 2 with 1 million players online in 100 different layers.
Thanks! I missed that because the volume was kind of low. That definitely makes sense as well. There’s no way you can have a 3000-player layer at the launch when everyone is only in just 6 starting zones
People should start listening at 4:00 They clearly have a plan that servers will hold many more people then they used too they just don’t want a thousand or more people in every starting zone on launch day. And by the time Kazzak is in game layering will be gone and that massive server population can all fight to get the kill.
Even with modern tech there will be limits on layers running and players allowed to join per minute to keep numbers down in starting zones. Yes there may be a queue to log in.

The whole point of layering was to avoid queues while retaining enough players for a healthy realm once they collapse. Using queues to regulate population is insane.

Layering will reduce queues during the mad rush of launch. Layers help you address tourists and the fact that everyone is going to be trying to get online at the same time at launch before falling into regular playing schedules.
That doesn’t mean you can simply let people go nuts and spool up an unlimited number of layers, otherwise you’re going to end up with a massive population that will never fall back down to that healthy number you’re trying to get to.
The fact that they’re using queues on launch is a good thing. I don’t understand why anyone would think otherwise. It means they’re interested in keeping populations in check so that they can remove layering from the game.
Also,
by having so few servers at start - all those who really are gung-ho for classic and energized over it (and thus far likelier to stick around) will play havoc with the retention figures.
If 1 out of 3 people who try classic stop in the first thee months, but your early servers are clogged with people who are more likely to stay - then you have a situation where the drop off figure could be 1 out of 10 on the earlier made servers, but then 1 out of 2, or 2 out of 3 on the later servers.
A year down the line, servers with healthy populations (high percentage of the very engaged player base), then servers that are ghost towns (had high percentage of people just trying it out)- IE the exact scenario that brought Cross-server realms.
so what happens after layers vanish / reduce and population hasn’t tapered off? we will have mega servers with 20k people on per server minimum. Why have layering in the first place when it is destined to happen anyways?
Nothing there is a lie. Phasing in phase 2 would be. Really not the same thing at all.
How will Herod be handled than without layering?
With queues, as the god we call “Vanilla” intended.
How will Herod be handled than without layering? How long can we expect queues to be without layering?
Answered your own question it appears. Queues if there isn’t enough dropoff by then.
I’m guessing people on Herod are going to be begging for layers on phase 2…
Probably 4 hour queues every night…
Honestly, if new guilds or groups of friends are forming still on Herod, that is their own fault. Blizzard marked it as full - as a projection of how it would be later (ie: not necessarily full now). It comes across as a warning ahead of time. All they can do really. Probably fine if too many NEW groups aren’t forming (not talking about people that are still signing up to be with people already there). People should heed the warning.
