Instead of layering

Corporations have feelings too! Leave Activision ALONE!

Their distribution infrastructure has been gutted. They don’t sell boxes for any game any more because its not worth the CD its printed on. That one’s a non-starter.

Except that they want those tourists in order to try and capture a bit more of a subscriber’s time. If that subscriber loves Classic, its a new addiction during the Retail lulls. A separate sub is a barrier to greater engagement, and as you pointed out, they are a business, not a person who likes exclusivity.

While we all would have loved it, I honestly don’t think this would have worked. The majority of players don’t go into the beta or PTR, and just wait for release. The tourists who want to have a look, want to look at the finished product, just like only a small portion of the player base plays things like the 8.2 PTR or BfA beta. The tourist effect would be slightly reduced, sure, but I don’t think an open beta would remove the need for Layering.

Yea sure

I know it’s not amazing with layering but it beats the heck outta sharding and hopefully will around a month or so after launch

why can’t they just have que times

It’s more then just alleviating queue times.
It’s so they can shove 9000 people on a realm…chop that into 3 virtual realms with 3K each and then hope 6K quit the game so a healthy 3K are left.

Prob cause it would hinder people from logging on and would stress the server.

Ima electrician, ever day I see burned devices with too much load on them…it’s not a pretty sight nor is the smell good

:woman_mage:

So your either stuck between playing it, which you will have to obviously forgive layering to some extent… and not playing it proving Elorell right.

I didn’t see anyone reply to you. I don’t have the link to the video I saw, but basicslly they explained it as follows (if any of this is inaccurate, someone correct me)

Sharding (in conjunction with cross realm) is like drawing a big grid of squares over the entire map. Each square is a shard. They populate these shards with a set number of players spawning new instances when theyre full. When you cross the grid line, it moves you into that shard (causing people in the previous grid to disappear).

Layering (which doesn’t include cross realm) is basically a big box around the entire continent. Once one layer is full, it shifts players to another layer. The advantage being that traveling around the zone doesnt cause players and nodes to pop in and out. (Still has some disadvantages of sharding like hopping layers to farm nodes)

I still think Dynamic respawns with a larger server cap for P1 would work best.
The entire server community is right there. no splitting, layering, sharding.

Thanks. Less confused now.

We need a term for people who played since Vanilla and quit in Cata and just came back (me). Oldbies?

One thing I LOVE now that I have returned is the mining nodes can be shared and theres no griefing or ninjaing nodes. Is this a product of the layering/sharding or is it a simply “personal spawn”.???

Serious question here, removing the layering system depends entirely on how many people are still playing, but what if there’s little drop off, will they keep layering indefinitely ( or for potentially years ) ?

Are you doing some wizardly timey wimey magic things where you try to get us ported back to the time in 2005, where Blizzard’s servers were burning and their unprepared butts got burned hard? Hold up, magician :raised_hand:
You can’t fool me with your time warp spell. This is 2019, also lovingly known as the “current year”. No server is going to burn. They said it themselves. They are prepared this time around, and have a set of olympic athlete level hamsters ready to take on the challenge :hamster::+1:

My watch has more storage and power than my PC did in 2004.

Nothing’s burning.
