Insane SEF Bugs - Guaranteed DPS Losses, and other UNREAL issues. #DELETESEF

Hey all, I have created a video showcasing some particularly egregious bugs with SEF, one of which is guaranteed to cost you damage on every cast of SEF, without fail. See below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1AV2gh0lX8

So basically, SEF clones are consistently dealing approx. 7.31% less damage than you are while it is active, ultimately meaning our CD which is meant to buff our damage by 20%, is only buffing it by around 14%.

I tested this with every rotational ability, with no gear on, and no enchants, and removed any possible thing that could cause any variation in my damage, or my clones, and it’s the same across the board.

The only thing that actually works with SEF is Slicing Winds (lol)

Even if this were to be fixed, there are other issues with SEF that can’t ever be realistically addressed, such as FoF/CJL not hitting every target due to your clones facing a certain direction, something you have no real control over.

With personal testing I have done on target dummies since Dragonflight, I regularly have my clones missing anywhere from 1/5th to 3/5th’s of their hits with Fists of Fury on a pack of 5 mobs, ultimately meaning that cast of FoF would have done more if I just hadn’t popped SEF in the first place. (With worst case being missing 4/5 targets entirely, which happens in my video)

This also happens with CJL, which is particularly bad since it makes up a very large portion of our damage currently.

And THEN, we’ve also got the timeless classic of SEF clones just not copying abilities AT ALL, which I also have an example of in my video.

As someone who has played heaps of Windwalker Monk, and has mained it since release (At least 750 days /played on my monks alone since MoP), I’ve put a lot of time into personal theorycrafting and understanding everything there is to know about this spec.

Since Storm, Earth, and Fire became a thing, it has had its bugs. Some of which have allowed for damage increases in the past, one of which involved CANCELLING SEF to increase damage of Dragon Punch.

After Legion reworked SEF into our main DPS cooldown, it’s just caused nothing but problems for us. Prior to Legion, SEF was something that used in specific scenarios. Multi-boss encounters in raids (Twin Ogron, in Highmaul, for example), or in PvP it could be used to eat traps, prevent restealths, split damage in certain controlled scenarios, or in 1v1’s like in the Hurricane Strike burst below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2ERUVtxWPQ

The difference was that you could cancel it and re-toggle it whenever you wanted, it had no CD, no GCD, you could use it freely and cancel it if it wasn’t going to work properly, while not exactly ideal to have to do so if something bugged out, at least it was something you could micro manage, and there wasn’t a huge loss involved.

Now though, since it’s our main and ONLY dps cooldown available, since Serenity is gone, we have no choice but to deal with those bugs.

Even though SEF has been patched countless times since Legion, it’s like it only gets worse with time. Every expansion has its own set of bugs and issues, and War Within has felt particularly bad in both PvP and PvE, which is ironic given the clones now move faster, copy Tiger’s Lust, and are immune to CC.

Prior to them being given the CC immunity, I had to actively cancel SEF so I didn’t do less damage that I would have if I didn’t use it, specifically because my clones got rooted in place, or feared, or whatever else.

It’s beyond a joke at this point, we need to seriously get rid of SEF. It doesn’t even make sense to keep it from a design perspective, it causes so many bugs and issues and doesn’t work properly with trinkets, new talents/traits and needs to be patched REGULARLY after new stuff is added.

Why are we keeping an ability in the game that requires an unreal amount of extra work and maintenance, when we could just remove it, replace it with Serenity, or Tigereye Brew, and all of these issues would be resolved.

So in summary, here are just SOME of the bugs I regularly encounter:

  • Abilities not copying from clones at all
  • Channels stopping mid-way through
  • FoF from clones casts later than yours (which means they finish channeling after you do, and since Momentum Boosts damage buff is only active when you are channeling, their last tick of FoF loses the damage buff)
  • CJL from clones channel stopping if a target they are channeling on dies
  • Clone damage on Fists of Fury and CJL sometimes being FAR lower than yours due to missing modifiers in some aspect (Likely some bug with Transfer the Power/Emperor’s Capacitor)

And then just annoying things, like:

  • Clones not facing the right way during channels, losing damage
  • Clones not re-fixating on a target after their fixated target dies, having to re-do it after every enemy death
  • Clones, when not fixated, flying off into space and hitting an enemy that’s not in a great position, costing you AoE damage
  • Also, when clones are not fixated, when moving and bouncing between abilities, if an ability is cast during that point, generally that ability will not be copied by them.
  • RIDICULOUS number clutter, with SEF tripling the amount of numbers on your screen, and Gale Force doubling on top of that during bursts, the damage is unreadable (No more chunky, big crits or anything like that)
  • Just overall micromanagement and watching your clones like a hawk to make sure they’re doing everything they’re supposed to

Anyway, let me know your thoughts, share the vid/post if you can. For the first time since MoP, I am genuinely taking a step away from PvP due to frustrations with this “ability”, and even though I am actively PvE’ing, I just find myself annoyed consistently by SEF acting up, in all aspects of PvE.

Please, PLEASE remove it, replace it with something else.

Sincerely,

A ticked off monk.

insane yapping but you earned my like by showing proof of it being bad. monks need more theory-crafters and testers like you buddy

its actually p good for pvp, i like it more then serenity, but one thing you mentioned is about the pet AI. the pet ai is horrendous in this game due to weird pathing, z-axis, pet’s randomly reset/catch aggro/change targets, etc…

Hasn’t SEF been bugged like this since WoD or something? I’m not trying to be rude I just heard about it being bugged before and I’ve never heard it was addressed.

It has always had its issues, but back then it was only used in specific situations in PvE and rarely in PvP, The reason why it’s more of a talking point nowadays is because it’s our main offensive CD, which we have no way of avoiding or opting out of (R.I.P Serenity)

So we kinda just work with what we’ve got but it’s frustrating, especially when you jump onto another class and everything just… works, their cooldowns do exactly what it says on the box, so to speak.

The only class Blizzard would let this slide on for years on end. Time to close the discord boys, apparently that’s how you get their attention now. :joy:

Excellent post, #deleteSEF

It should be the biggest red flag imaginable that the fewest issues are found in spells that just get a flat 20% buff during SEF.

SEF is especially tilting me this season since we cast it more often due to shado pan and we face more bugs due to CJL. I literally hate ara kara because of this ability. If you fixate sef to the mini bosses they fly over behind to the mini bosses towards the edge and usually they only hit the mini boss not the other 20 targets. You lose insane amount of damage.

Always hated SEF. Give me back my precious serenity.

Awesome work man! Thanks for putting so much detail in.

lmao, I haven’t even noticed that, although by the sound of it, it sounds something like this clip I posted on my old channel a while back:

So a few things. There have been some talents that were added TWW in which SEF DO NOT gain from. Those are Acclimation, Dual Threat, and Chi Proficiency. I first posted about this back in February and so far they have not been fixed. The mods in the Monk discord are also aware of these bugs and have been harping the devs as well, but so far nothing:

No Acclimation, No Dual Threat, No Chi Proficiency (Baseline)

1 Stack Acclimation, No Dual Threat, No Chi Proficiency (3% difference)

2 Stack Acclimation, No Dual Threat, No Chi Proficiency (6% difference)

No Acclimation, Dual Threat Activated, No Chi Proficiency (5% difference)

No Acclimation, No Dual Threat, 1 talent point into Chi Proficiency (2% difference)

No Acclimation, No Dual Threat, 2 talent point into Chi Proficiency (4% difference)

Yeah, I was also informed about that on the discord yesterday. I guess it’s nice to know where that damage loss is coming from.

But this kinda just loops back to my point about how every time they bring new stuff in, it’s gotta be patched specifically with SEF in mind, trinkets, talents, tier sets, blah blah blah, it’s always broken. And we’re in the final patch of War Within, like… come on lol

Would be so much simpler and less stressful for everyone if SEF were replaced ^.^

SEF has always been such a problem, but I think it would be such a shame to remove an iconic ability that dates back to WC3.

I’d much prefer if they just completely reworked it into a flat 20% damage increase and make the clones a visual only thing, one standing on either side of your character but no longer being pets that do damage individually. Keep the theme of SEF but remove the garbage.

I guess I personally have no kind of attachment to its WC3 iteration, never really played WC3 beyond the campaign way back then.

But I get what you mean, could easily be reworked to be purely cosmetic and a flat 20% damage buff, or just splits your own personal damage into three, but your character is the one dealing those three hits, not your clones.

Or, could do something similar to the Dragon Aspect shout from Skyrim, but Xuen themed. Just anything to get away from our damage being dealt by pet versions of ourselves XD

And like, they could add a talent and make it share a choice node between SEF and something else (Serenity/Tigereye), make it exactly the same balancing wise, it’d give a 20% damage amp and nothing else for 15 seconds, 2 charges, same interactions with talents, just small niche differences and personal preference (Kinda like Shadow Crash for Shadow Priests) But ironically it’d actually be a solid dps gain for many reasons cause of bugs with SEF, but whatever haha, at least that way if people wanted to use SEF for the aesthetic or niche scenarios, they could…

There are so many ways around this which I don’t think would realistically take much dev time, I just can’t wrap my head around why nothing has been done yet, especially since Mark of the Crane is gone.

Honestly, I’m in the camp of turning Invoke Xuen into a personal buff in the likes of Dragon Aspect, nuke all of the pet AI in one sweep. The disappointment I feel every time I see Xuen leap out at to enemy that charged/teleported out of the pack, only for Xuen to slow walk back, is unreal.

I think I just differ slightly in opinion because I’d prefer to keep SEF+Xuen and our toolkit pretty much as-is (mechanically, tuning is an entirely different conversation lmao), but rework them both to be player character centered and no longer reliant on janky pet AI.

That situation you described about Xuen, I feel that in my core haha.

Eco Dome right now is AWFUL for that, for SEF clones as well, constantly needing to re-fixate since half the stuff in that place is teleporting non-stop, ughhh

But yeah, I think we’re more or less on the same page, I just want the pet AI gone most of all. Whichever way they decide to go about that… I’d be happy with ^.^

i vote we just close the discord till they rework storm, earth, fire. also i made a macro to cancel storm earth fire before my CJL for pvp and it is 10/10 1000% better feeling so long as you get the 20% agi from Against all odds hero talant.

Yup, same here, I get my 20% agi from double procs with the set bonus, then cancel it if i wanna CJL :<
