Question is why dont those artists make in game items even half as detailed, clearly they are doing something right, why not have lots of gear look decent? Instead of the one thing on the in game store?
So, I think someone should break out the difference to you between being a Freelancer and being employed as an artist in a company.
Freelancers don’t get paid unless they have a job to do, as you mentioned.
Blizzard employees that work on WoW get paid, even if by some miracle, they aren’t already working on the next zone to come out, new raid sets, raid layout and artstyle and whatnot.
If I made something amazing, and was told the only way to get it was to pay more money on top of what people are already paying just to play the game, I’d also be saying “Blizz stop being greedy”
I’d want people to be able to enjoy my creations without unnecessary baggage that makes people resent it’s existence.
Imagine being an artist struggling to make ends meet then some moderately attractive girl on TikTok bobs her head for like 5 seconds and gets a million dollars.
Your edit doesn’t make sense either. You think artists have downtime?? Do you know what comes with being an artist in a large corp like Blizzard?
These people are worked to the bone. You don’t get the luxury of downtime. They deal with being poorly treated just to have Blizzard on their resume for their next job.
I know this because I wanted to be an artist for someone like Blizzard. But bailed on that idea after learning the harsh reality.
Back in 2016 i got a small taste of what it’s like to do a job with a large online video game publisher; and it pretty much scared me away from doing anything like that again; i had to outright demand payment before they paid me for 3 months of commercial work.
I’d love to be able to commission an artist to make me a unique transmog to my specifications and for my exclusive use. The appropriate price there would be whatever the artist and I agreed on.
I don’t see how that relates at all to game rewards inside a game I paid up front to purchase, and then each month to subscribe to, with no direct contact to any artists nor any ability to commission anything.
Yeah, I definitely wouldn’t want to work for a company that charges their fan base more money for something that should be added into the game with a fun story or questline in the first place.
Yet another person who doesn’t understand how game budgets work. It doesn’t matter if game budgets are “very healthy”, they’re still very strict, and it seems likely to me that for BFA they spent more on cinematics than usual, and they had to cut somewhere else. And as it’s been said multiple times in the thread, store items are most likely done off budget between projects, so they have to make the money back somehow.
