There are plenty of people who play this game and use their friendships/relationships through it as a form of control. Anyone who’s had extensive interactions with other players has come across individuals who fit that bill rather well. So I have to disagree with you here - leaving silently could’ve been a dogwhistle to anyone manipulative enough or bored enough to pick a fight and while I can’t say I believe OP 100%, I do think there are people who DO pursue and persist with an issue, regardless of how you react.
