Not everyone does a sub. I myself do month to month. Many retailers could have been on month to month, only coming back when there was new content.
Not if a large number of those are jumping back and forth between classic and retail, and a number of multibox bloat brought about by retail tokens.
The “fringe group” is what lobbied for classic to even exist. The rest of the population is just enjoying the bundled sub.
you are missing the point entirely. They were a solid metric for the popularity of each WoW version. Are you seriously handwaving this?
a) they had a choice between that and not playing
b) none of those players (beyond betatesters) knew what it would be like
c) there was no choice to remain on vanilla locked servers

Again, you are missing the point of the above factors, and that PSs were literally metrics of popularity AFTER players knew what each expansion was like.
