Spot on… around 400 games on mine and mostly bought during sales where it was half off or better. I got everything sitting on a 4TB drive that’s half way filled. It’s basically like having a modern Atari 2600 except all the cartridges are downloaded…hic!
What about inflation?
Oh yes, it’s always been a fair value, and there’s something super special about getting a commission of a character I create. I can see them there, it’s a visual of them, a piece of me whether they be a game OC or from a book. I feel bad about it though because I spend so much on it, like I’ve bought a LOT of art for my characters. In the end, though, it is supporting other artists. Which is an important thing. So I can feel a bit less bad. But in this case, it’s more of a ‘wow I am spending a TON on this …’
Will I stop? For now yes, but commissions are something I spend fun money on. Like some buy tons of games, some buy brand clothing, some go out all the time. In my case? Art.
That makes sense! I wish that were the case for most to be honest. I’ve done research and the cover is extremely important for sales >< I have a silly dream to be a successful author someday, meaning I have to look into how to properly market. It. is. terrible. I hate marketing. But covers are the bane of my existence. I hate the ones I currently have and they do not fit, so now I have to spend even more to get proper art for them. In the end, though, it is worth it–because it’s for my passion and possible eventual business.
Oh hell, I spent way more then that on things like coffee, movies or going out for drinks with friends. 15 years of entrainment for $3.5k is a steal!
3 grand for 15 years of entertainment?
I couldve spent ALOT more on entertainment doing other things.
WoW has saved me money making me too lazy to go to the rippers.
I’ve spent almost 7 Million Gold on WoW.
Yeah that’s where the money is. I don’t use them much anymore but i had a period where i spent easily thousands on these and i was broke AF. Depression has a way to screw with your priorities.
But it was a me problem ofc.
Honestly Legion’s systems onwards were the cure as i went from playing 8 characters to like 1-3, so even if i transfer (i put way too much value over the things i earned in this game over the years, so i always xfer instead of rerolling a character of a class i already have), it doesn’t cost nearly as much.
Approximately 6,789,455 Gold, 57 Silver, and 82 Copper.
Blizzard makes a lot of money with their ingame services and store on-top of the subscriptions. We’re talking billions of dollars yearly.
I’ve spent FAR more than that just keeping my pc updated since 07.
I think I’ve spent more >.<
Have every collectors edition, have everything off the store (some was free, most was on sale), and have had a 6 month sub for a very long time.
Then times 2 for my wife / daughters account. And to be specific, those are 2 different people.
I’ve spent close to over $50,000 with Blizzard since the early 90’s. At one point I was paying for 4 accounts for a few years, merch for my kids every year in the store and 7 trips to Blizzcon that cost about $5k per trip.
It was there from the beginning and I have been using it since the start. (I actually had looked to see if there was a year recurring subscription with bigger savings, but there wasn’t.) I did the math at one point relatively recently and it came out to about three years of gametime for free. Or you could look at it as having covered all the mounts and pets from the cash store (and I have all of them) with some leftover to spare.
In any case, you save a LOT with the 6-month recurring sub if you’re going to be subbed anyhow.
Okay, it won’t cover what I’ve spent on merch, which is a considerable amount. But the original poster was just talking the game itself, not the fan fallout from it.
Though even counting in merch with the game, this is hands-down the cheapest hobby ever for me.
Maybe I’ve been lucky, but I haven’t had to kill myself updating my PC for WoW. Especially when you consider my ASUS RoG laptop lasted me all the way from Ultraxion in Dragonsoul (that was where my previous ASUS waved the white flag and gave out on me – it had been purchased when the computer before it waved the white flag when the Argent Tournament grounds were put in in Wrath) until the start of BfA… and even then it was still running fine!! It was my husband who convinced me to get a new one because of how picky I am about laptops and under the threat of “you know a six-plus year old laptop has the chance to give out at ANY time…” combined with “if it gives out in the middle of raid, you are NOT GOING TO BE HAPPY.” (He knows me well. )
I love you for this breakdown!!
For me, as of September 2021 the math will look like:
16 years = 32 6-mo payments = $416
Base game + 8 expansions = $540
Total cost per day = ~$0.16
Not exactly right since there’s been a few brief lapses but it’s close. Haven’t spent a penny on shop stuff for myself (have gifted a couple of times), not even tokens.
It’s better than paying by the hour for many, I’m sure. Still, that’s almost as much money as my entire PC game library, so there is some perspective.
What happens in WOW stays in WOW. My wife’s gonna kill me !!!
My hobby is licking tree’s
It’s easy, free, and legal
Tweezer investors rejoice!
I don’t even want to think about how much money I’ve given to Blizz over the years. I have been playing since mid mid vanilla and have had between 1 and 5 accounts active at a time (I multiboxed for awhile, other times I just needed more character slots). I’ve server hopped / faction changed / name changed more characters than I remember playing (I even put in for a name change on a character back in BC, and forgot to log back into them to change their name… they are still sitting there pending).
That being said… compared to what some people do with their money for entertainment (bar hopping / clubbing / movies / outdoor activities / hobbies / etc…), it is probably been a good deal.
I’m down to one account now, and I haven’t even logged into that one in over a month. I’m patiently waiting to see if WoW brings something to the table to interest me again.
“Only” I mean if I were unemployed and claiming disability or something I would maybe think that as well. But hell no
