If WoW dies so will the MMORPG Genre as we know it

Speak for yourself,Final Fantasy XIV has a pretty awesome RP community [and community as a whole and Yoshi P tends to always grant requests players give IE-Blue mages and soon,Viera] and from what my buddies told me,ESO’s isn’t too shabby either. What people don’t realize is Genres NEVER die, they become less popular for a while then have another lease at gaming life. For a while, platformers weren’t made as frequently now we have the Crash and Spyro reboot,Yooka Laylee [which I enjoyed],Cuphead and various others being made.

Fighting games are still being made despite people wanting to follow the battle royale craze/Fortnite/Streamer bait as are FPS and regular RPGs. Hells, there are still the occasional RTS that still get made despite not being as popular. By your argument any game that isn’t popular automatically kills the genre which is a very silly way and overly dommsayish pessimistic way to see things don’t you think?

People are going to play what’s in the current trends no matter what people may try, which is fine as long as they are encouraged to try the other genres as well rather than seeing a fun hobby as a fashion statement. Despite the doom and gloom and the issues that could be fixed,WoW is still doing alright as anything in any millions bracket isn’t really somethign to sneeze at and there are still many other MMOs with a fairly small population that are still doing fairly well and some who got a second lease at life by releasing onto console as well as PC IE- TERA [which has a small but decent RP community from my experience] and soon Blade&Soul. EQ2 is still going pretty strong as is its predecessor which has been around at least five years longer than WoW. To say a game isn’t doing well due to either lack of popularity or the majority not being of only the RP community more or less comes off as confirmation bias, but this is merely my honest opinion so this thread is just another doomsayer to add to the bracket.

Okay? I mean, that’s your prerogative, but that’s the genre that it’s classified under so… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pokémon_(video_game_series)

Do you have a source for that fact, or is it just your opinion? Personally, I play both (and know many other people who do the same).

Okay, fair enough. It’s technically classified as an “action-adventure” game rather than an RPG.

Yes, and FFXIV/ESO/GW2, etc. are still MMOs which allow you to play a role - ergo, RPGs.

The genre, other than ones already in it, has pretty much been dead for 5 years, it was actually a surprise ESO joined it, but don’t expect any more.

But, I think it won’t die so much as become ‘niche’. Much like survival horror did when Konami/Capcom suddenly decided they needed to get away from big budget Silent Hill/RE (horror) games.

Then, indie companies moved in. That said… indie companies doing a good, simple game is one thing, not sure we’ll see them ever pull off a solid mmo.

Wow hasn’t been a MMORPG in a long time. When was the last true RP feature to get added in? When did they add in player housing? How long ago was it that RP rules on RP realms were enforced?

If WoW dies, I will just start playing the latest Final Fantasy MMO, maybe SWTOR if that’s not dead yet.

Garrisons.

No MMORPGs will be fine without WoW. There are a couple that are becoming more and more popular now and they have this garbage expansion to thank for it. This dumpster fire of an expansion has caused many people to look for other MMOs to scratch their MMO itch.

Blizzard really needs to go all in on the next expansion if they want to keep WoW alive. Needs to be something new, some hidden continent on the other side of the world or something not the same old garbage with a different coat of paint. They need to actually listen to players for once.

I know if my friends weren’t still playing I would have quit with the announcement of BFA, didn’t even need to play it to know it was going to be awful.

No MMORPGs would Phase out the RP pat.

What a complete and utter load of nonsense. WoW has quite possibly done the least of all MMORPGs in that regard, both in terms of providing options to facilitate actual roleplaying within the game itself, and fostering roleplaying communities in general.

FFXIV’s roleplaying community alone is leaps and bounds ahead of WoW’s own, and that game does far more to promote that particular playstyle than WoW ever has.

Then why is the QUALITY of FFXIV RP is so low?

No it won’t if anything it will give more opportunities for new games. WoW’s hold has harmed the MMO market over the years.

IDK about most of those games but FFXIV and ESO have better stories and ESO has more RP potential.

OP, thank you so much for brightening my day with your gag post!

Uhm… what?

They have very clearly defined Lore that is adhered to strictly and characters that do not change personality at the drop of a pin to suit whatever, “Cool Story,” crops into the minds in charge. Most of those games also have timelines and histories that have never been called into question due to conflicting sources, or endured retcon after retcon to, again, tell whatever the people in charge think would be a, “Cool Story.”

I’m sorry, WoW has largely failed to support the RP community. The most they’ve done is to add a potion for cross-faction communication AFTER unintentionally breaking an addon that allowed for it. I mean, Blizzard couldn’t even give Alliance RP’ers the High Elves that we’ve been asking for since Vanilla, or the Wildhammers, or the Vykrul.

WoW doesn’t support RP anymore. It supports whatever the people in charge think is, “New, Cool, and Interesting.”

you must not play ff14 or didnt pay attention to it enoguh.

it has more RP support than WoW.

literally 2 backstories to a race during creation a last name AND a birthday, each race has a place in the world, the emotes you are able to do are INFINITELY more expressive and varied than WoW’s, built in translator (while not the best does open the ppl you can interact with), tons of events with new gear models (Weapon and armor), player housing, actual interactive professions and more.

if u place ff14 and wow next to each other from JUST an RP stand point ff14 dominates it.

also allowing a person to change jobs at anytime is more “rp” friendly than wow since ppl change jobs all the time.

(p.s. not meaning WoW is better all around just that for strictly RP wow has no support from game itself just the players which all games have equal)

Mayhap you’re not looking hard enough I RP on my toons in FF XIV on a near daily basis after work and found an amazing free company on Mataeus. I run around to level my Ninja and be it in Uldah,Limsa Lominsa or even Gridania,I see people RPing in the streets or the main hub taverns, saw an interesting debate about the Garleans’ magitech in The Drowning Wench just last night when on my way to buy ingredients to level my Culinarian crafting job to unlock the next class story quest [oh gods do I love the crafting in that game if that isn’t immersion, dunno what is anymore] Tanking as a paladin feels especially immersive and when out leveling him I see Free companies doing events all the time in the world as well! As I said either you aren’t looking hard enough or you probably have the bad luck of time differences.

Perhaps you’re being lied to and should see so for yourself the saying “The proof in the pudding is in the eating” exists for a reason. I used to believe as a kid sushi was gross since a friend said so,but my sister convinced me eventually to try some and it’s become my second favorite food, first being seafood pasta.

I don’t know. What have you heard about the FFXIV RP communities? From what I gather they’re fairly well developed and active people. Not hard when they have a game that provides so much RP support.

cause most ppl dont like RP?

especially if they have it shoved down their throat?

i dont mind ff14 RP, i dont mind wow RP, but there are tiems i want it to go away. (like when u have ppl rping beggars and beg money in trade, dance naked at a goldshire inn, etc.)

also judging a community on a games RP support isnt logical as no game has same community as another. (apples to oranges thing)

I mean you can hop on FF14 make a Lalafell, run to Ul’dah, and find many RP ppl who act like stuck up snobs to other races. (since that city is ruled by lalafell).

WoW is barely an MMO anymore, so no, it won’t.

Classic and other games like Pantheon will determine if the MMORPG is a dead genre.
